Hi!

I've been wrestling with this problem for a while, but I'm really stuck as to how to diagnose/troubleshoot it.

I've got ntpd installed, and I believe I've got it set up correctly. Running /etc/init.d/ntp-client at startup sets the time correctly, and from the reading I've done, /etc/init.d/ntpd should keep running forever, keeping me in sync.

That's all well and good, but I'm not really sure where things go south. At startup, my time is setup correctly, ntpd is running, and I usually walk away. But then I come back a while later only to find ntpd shut off, my time off by as much as several hours, and I'm left very, very confused.

Can anyone tell me where to start looking? My logfiles are relatively clean of anything obvious...

Thanks, and sorry for the nebulous question.

Ah, of course, right after I post this, I discover something in my day-old logs:

Jul 5 04:05:04 megatron ntpd[14538]: time correction of 1003 seconds exceeds sanity limit (1000); set clock manually to the correct UTC time.

I'm going to try and set the clock to UTC and see what happens.... not that I know where to start with.

Hopefully i'll post a message quickly with resolution - if someone gets to this before me, let me know. Otherwise, maybe this'll help someone else out. :)

Awesome, In the matter of 5 minutes, I've managed to have a discussion with only myself, and possibly solve my problem.

Anyhow, I continue onward with the hopes of helping someone else out.

I edited /etc/conf.d/clock, and changed my CLOCK="local" to CLOCK="UTC", stopped ntpd, restarted ntp-client and then started ntpd, and my clock seems sane.

The true test will happen over time, but at least I have confidence that I did *something*.

Thanks for putting up with me. ;)
