I've tried pretty much everything I could find. Googling everything that came to my mind.

I believe it's a problem with AIGLX. Just to check, I tried openSuSE and Ubuntu Live CDs and they both showed compiz-fusion effects but everything was messed up and corrupt. I could see the effects working but random black parts appeared and nothing was really visible.

I've tried to find a way to install XGL but couldn't find a proper overlay or any other way to install it.

How can I get compiz-fusion to work on an R300 card (more specifically an ATI Radeon X300SE) ?

(couldn't get any of the effects to work in Gentoo--the window borders just disappear and I've tried everything I could try an no result)

maybe you need mesa and xf86-video-ati from git. or at least mesa-7.1rc1.

i remember that ubuntu 7.10 had compiz enabled on livecd with r300 cards. so maybe you just need to do some tweaking around xorg.conf.
