When I emerge KDE 4, everything worked. Recently, I had a power outage that brought the computer down dirty. When it came up, KDE looked a little funny after login. The bottom strip of the panel was visible at the top of the screen. If I hover the mouse over the KDE Menu button, that tiny segment of the icon, that has been relocated to the top of the screen,, glows brighter blue like the rest of the (properly positioned) icon.
More problematic, the keyboard does not work in KDE (Not even CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE or CTRL-ALT-DEL!). I cannot switch consoles or anything until I leave KDE. I tried booting from a livecd and fsck'ing the drive. No luck. The problem is present regardless of user. I even tried the forbidden and logged in as root- still persisted. I figured it might be a corrupt binary, so I emerged KDE4 and updated (most) packages to 4.0.5 (Or whatever the latest available was).
The computer is a Sony B100B laptop.
Any ideas what to try next? re-emerge System?

If your keyboard works in other desktop envorinment, but not kde4.0.5, then it is probably a kde problem.
if you reinstalled all 4.0.5 packages and it still doesn't work you can either -e world (there goes some computer time)
or upgrade to 4.1 which will upgrade so many packages you are almost sure to fix any kde4.0 specific problem.

elseif you still have the problem in other desktop environments, then it is probably something lower...X maybe?

Have you tried to delete all kde configuration files? Something like:

Code:
#rm -rf ~\.kde

would be a great idea (need to get .kde4.0, especially if the link is currently pointing to .kde3.5) except he said.

perhaps I wrongly assumed he tried a blank user...but always a good place to start, a vanilla user with no previous settings, and more importantly kde sessions. (I disable session restoring...unnecessary in my mind).
