I am attempting to emerge -vat @kde-4.1. I get to libqalculate and it dies with:
Code:

I do not know if this is related or not but I have recently had to turn down my cpu to 62% power to keep it from overheating while emergeing software.

sync your overlays / tree and update portage to 2.2_rc8 and try again

How do I update to the new portage. I am assuming it is in an overlay. Which one?

I was assuming those problems were either due to overlay-problems or due to portage .2-rc7

so just
Code:
emerge -1 portage
should be fine

you are not able to fork because system has run out of memory. Configure a swap device. If you have less than 1GB RAM, Google for compcache. Its trivial to use it but it gives huge savings (like make 512MB of your RAM to appear as 1.5G compressed swap, stored inside RAM) on a modern enough processor.

I have a gig of Ram and I am runing a mixlib amd64 and what I read says that compcache is only for x86.

Is it possible I have some bad memory? If so how would I check for that? The other thing(not sure if it is related or not) is that my processor has been overheating to the point of killing my system. I have had to resort to turning down my processor to 62 or 50% of what it is capable of.

Also is it possible to to add swap space to my computer. ( I have the standard that is in the Gentoo Handbook.)

you should check if heatsink is seated properly. If it is, then use some thermal paste and reattach the heatsink.

Bad memory doesn't look like the case. But you can test it with memtest86+ anyway overnight.

compcache runs fine on x86_64 (amd64).
