Hi,

just installed Gentoo on the Mac Mini G4 1.25GHz. Works just great, but I have a serious problem with xorg. I´ve ran xac 0.6-pre4 to create a xorg.conf. It works and I can start X11.

But first it is not the correct resolution yet (i´d like to see 1600x1200), and when I kill the X (ctrl + alt + backspace) the whole mac crashes. Can´t connect via SSH then or do anything else. Just get a black screen. Any ideas?

The xorg.conf can be seen here.

Thanks a lot in advance.

that should be easy if you are sure both monitor and graphic controller support that resolution.
Either you only set that resolution on every available depth mode in your xorg.conf or you just use ctrl+alt+ + or - to switch between all available resolutions.
Keep an eye on your logs to triple check you don´t have any problems when enabling some new resolution and to see if the wanted resolution is supported at all.

i had sth like that with an unstable gentoo install on my powerbook (although ssh and sysrq did work here) , switching to the latest (hardmasked) xorg server apparently did the trick here. Are you running unstable too ?
I think it probably is the radeon driver as i have read about it somewhere some time ago, try downgrading it, maybe that helps a bit further.

cheers

Ok i´ve upgraded to a later xorg server now (just add them to the keywords file). Also tried all different drivers, the 6.6.3 see seems to be the only one suitable to avoid a total system crash. Yet I don´t have anything on the screen when X starts :(

I don´t think this one is gona work :(

is there sth strange in your logs ?
If you upgraded to the latest (hardmasked) xorg server you have to rebuild all modules ( keyboard, evdev, radeon driver, etc), because they changed their abi.

cheers

ok, i´ve checked the versions. Currently installed: Xorg 7.3 now with the Radeon 6.9.0 Driver. Kernel is 2.6.26 with the radeon driver module.

X works with 1024x768, even if I set something else. The effect I was hoping for, to have a faster Firefox to work with the Typo3 backend, seems to happen.

As soon as I force X to do some kind of shutdown (for example logout or Kill), the whole system freezes.

I tried turining off all Acceleration and things like that, no effect :(

The Xorg Log does not tell me anything obvious I´d understand. There are some interesting points like this:

Quote:
(WW) ****INVALID IO ALLOCATION**** b: 0xf0000400 e: 0xf00004ff correcting^G
(EE) end of block range 0xefffffff < begin 0xf0000000

Thats about it. The full log can be found here, the xorg.conf is here.

If it is really some kind of driver or Xorg Bug, then I´m doomed at that. I´m not extactly an experienced runtime programmer (at least not yet).

Is there any other driver like the vesa on x86 I can use? I do not need all this fancy 3D crap ... just a fast and clean gnome with firefox :?

Thank you for your help so far. Maybe you see more than I do in this log.

ok, the problem is solved, but not with gentoo :/

I now use ubuntu 8.04 which had exactly the same problem first. Anyway solved the problem and I´m happy with a Linux Mac. At least thats a chance to see what else is going on on the Linux market except for gentoo and read debian ;)

If anyone is interested in the Ubuntu Forum Post: here you go.
