I have KDE 3.5.9. I'm interested in Plasma. Can I unmask this and emerge it without screwing up my existing KDE installation? Or does using this mean migrating to KDE 4 altogether?

Plasma is a desktop shell. If you use it, then your desktop is KDE 4. You can always use KDE 3.5 programs from 4 and they are
installed separately so you can choose which one to use when logging in. Oddly enough, you can run plasma also on top of KDE 3
desktop (just run it) although the final result may not be too usable.

My advice is that you grab KDE 4.1 from overlay or wait for it to hit the tree. For base testing just emerge plasma and its deps
and use 3.5 apps on top of it. Your 3.5.9 will remain there, login manager will offer you kde (3) or kde-4. The new KDE still has its
share of glitches so expect a few bumps on the way.
