The handbook, section 4.c for ppc says that /dev/hda2 or /boot should not be mounted for an apple machine as it is not needed.
Should I just comment out the line for /dev/hda2 in /etc/fstab ?

I don't know about Apple machines, but in general it is true that if you have a separate /boot partition, it does not have to be mounted all the time.

This is simply because only kernel image and grub is stored on /boot, and you don't need either of them anymore once the system booted.

However, if you want to change your grub config, or install a new kernel image, naturally you'll have to mount the partition to store the data on, so you do want an fstab entry for /boot, that allows you to 'mount /boot' just like that, but that doesn't mount /boot automatically all the time.

If you are referring to the Apple_Bootstrap partition, it should not even be mentioned in /etc/fstab.
If you are using the disk layout in 4.b. for a New World Mac, with hd for sd, only sda3 and sda4 will appear need to be in your /etc/fstab.
