I was able to emerge vmware-server and vmware-server-console, but when I try to launch a virtual machine I get an error message window that says:

Quote:
Unable to change virtual machine power state: The process exited with an error:

VMware Server Error:
VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for your running kernel. To (re-)configure it, your system administrator must find and run "vmware-config.pl". For more information, please see the VMware Server documentation.

Press "Enter" to continue...
End of error message.

I then rerun vmware-config.pl and I still get the same message. I have recompiled my kernel and I have re-emerged vmware-server and vmware-server-console. My kernel version: 2.6.25-gentoo-r7

Code:
su
rm /etc/vmware/not_configured

if that not_configured file continues to reappear everytime you start the vmware service, then you are in the same position as i am

im thinking of adding the remoe command to the end of the init.d script to avoid having to remove it everytime myself

Thank you for the suggestion, after remove not_configured , I got a step further buy with another error, and after enable virtual
machine's run with debugging information, turned out something to do with vmmon module not loaded, and after manually enable
vmmon module using:
Code:
modprobe vommon

again I got a "FATAL: Error" message and after dmeg for detail error message, I got
Quote:
vmmon: Unknown symbol init_mm
.

Seems it is a known bug and been fixed in overlay. No idea whether or
not it will hit portage or when.

Read the bug carefully. The "fix" is only a check in the ebuild if UNUSED_SYMBOLS is enabled in your kernel. You have to enable it by yourself in your kernel config.

Thanks S.hase for correct me, and I am glad someone more careful than me point it out, otherwise I am probably going to emerge vmware overlay today.

I was indeed in too much hurry yesterday, and was actually thinking about writing "CONFIRMATION NEEDED" before mark it solved and realized later that
it is not my thread.

Anyway, this bug is quite easy to fix but in our cases take quite a effort to find out its root and neither Gentoo Wiki nor ebuild/emerge message provide
useful information. I am going to put something in Wiki after make sure build UNUSED_SYMBOLS into my kernel works.

Same with me, need change virtual machine settings to show debugging information and then revealed yet another error message as I mentioned in my
post.

Now I got virtual machine started but again got:
Quote:
Unable to connect to the MKS: You need execute access in order to connect with the VMware Server Console. Access denied for config file: /media/MyData/vmware/Virtual Machines/Deepin XP 6.2/Deepin XP 6.2.vmx.

And yes, I double checked and that vmx file have all the access right it need. Had installed Vmware-server and Virtual box several times before,
never have such a difficult time.

Finally got it working! Thank you for remind me again!

Must admit it is quite logical to suspect something to do with the file system, but I in fact never know such a option exist and
/media/MyData was mounted without noexec or exec option, put a exec option fixed it.

Every time I just following Gentoo wiki step by step, maybe this one can help?
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_setup_VMware
If you get stuck in somewhere, just post your problem back here or in IRC, I am not an expert,
but I will try to follow you on daily basis and I am sure other more knowledgeable people will come in.
