Hi everyone,

virtualbox 2.0 just got released,

the biggest news is 64bit guest-support (on 64bit-hosts only atm):

Quote:
VirtualBox 2.0.0 (released 2008-09-04)

This version is a major update. The following major new features were added:

* 64 bits guest support (64 bits host only)
* New native Leopard user interface on Mac OS X hosts
* The GUI was converted from Qt3 to Qt4 with many visual improvements
* New-version notifier
* Guest property information interface
* Host Interface Networking on Mac OS X hosts
* New Host Interface Networking on Solaris hosts
* Support for Nested Paging on modern AMD CPUs (major performance gain)
* Framework for collecting performance and resource usage data (metrics)
* Added SATA asynchronous IO (NCQ: Native Command Queuing) when accessing raw disks/partitions (major performance gain)
* Clipboard integration for OS/2 Guests
* Created separate SDK component featuring a new Python programming interface on Linux and Solaris hosts
* Support for VHD disk images

In addition, the following items were fixed and/or added:

* VMM: VT-x fixes
* AHCI/SATA: improved performance
* GUI: keyboard fixes
* Linux installer: properly uninstall the package even if unregistering the DKMS module fails
* Linux additions: the guest screen resolution is properly restored
* Network: added support for jumbo frames (> 1536 bytes)
* Shared Folders: fixed guest crash with Windows Media Player 11
* Mac OS X: Ctrl+Left mouse click doesn’t simulate a right mouse click in the guest anymore. Use Hostkey+Left for a right mouse click emulation. (bug #1766)

anyone has an ebuild for it ? ;)

installed but only starts as root. says something about root uid
and i have added user to vboxusers to no avail.

this is the error;

VirtualBox: SUPR3HardenedMain: effective uid is not root (euid=1024 egid=1036 uid=1024 gid=1036)

do you used a new ebuild or just bumped the 'old' one to the 2.0.0 version?

bumped the 1.6.6 ebuild to 2.0.0
i have googled around but no solution so far.

creating vm as root crashes too but it's a known problem.
virtual box page says to use vbmanager to create new vm as root.

I suggest to wait until we have an official ebuild for 2.0.0
I tried the same like you and got the very same result. Running VB as root is a no go for me and so I have to wait until there is an official release. I hope soon because the AMD64 support sounds good ;)

VB has traditionally been big on CPU and powertop reports more (3 times more) wakeups compared to vmware. Now, I am no VMWare fan but I think VB needs more time. I am just hoping that they have addressed some of those issues in 2.0. We will find out soon.

I have waited for 64-bit support for some time as well. I really want VB to succeed and move over to it completely.
