On my G3 iBook (800MHZ G3, 256MG RAM). I downloaded the 32-bit PPC ISO.

I held C, got to a Gentoo boot prompt, booted the available kernel.

But gets stuck at:

smp_core99_probe
core99_setup_ cpu done

won't go any further than that. Is this a problem with the ISO I used? Or could it be that the iBook I am using won't boot Linux with this type of configuration?

Anyone have any ideas?

I've checked that site, and no where does it say it supports PPC hardware.

just guessing now, but which one exactly did you download ? 2008.0 release has only one livecd with both, a 64 bit kernel and a 32 bit kernel on it, and in your case you should load the 32 bit one of course. If you aren´t using the 2008.0 livecd maybe try with this one ?

cheers

... So to fix my problem I have to download a different ISO?

Isn't there anyone here that would know why the one I downloaded is not working?

The version I downloaded is stated right in the title. But here it is:

Gentoo 2007.0 Universal PPC 32-Bit Installer

I tried the 2008.0 Universal PPC CD, and I still get stuck at the same place. It won't go any further in the boot process.

I know it is not the machine that is incompatible with Linux since a Ubuntu PPC LiveCD boots up just fine.

Maybe it is the way the Gentoo devs compiled the kernel is the problem?

Is there anyone else that might be able to help me?

Did you burn the ubuntu cd on the same brand cdr/cdrw as the gentoo cd's or is the ubuntu cd a 'silver' mass production cd? Older machines sometimes have trouble reading cdr and cdrw media. Anyway, if the ubuntu cd boots, use that one to install gentoo.

I installed Gentoo via the Ubuntu CD. It usually just swaps back forth on the CD, but it was more managable with a swap partition on the actual disc.

Inside Gentoo atm, installing Xorg. Probably have to rebuild some of it's packages since I forgot to set some use flags. But the important thing is that it is running.
