Your wlecome, now update your website! :P

I don't have to. It's here.

This is where issues of this type are to be discussed. The seed site is strictly for the distribution of seeds. There is a link from the seeds site to this thread, and I clearly tell folks to put questions and comments in this thread. Since this is an issue, it's here. When I get a break in my action and can do a little investigation into my seeds, I'll see how I've set that up, and whether or not it's a change that should come in the next seed version.

Blessed be!
Pappy

Any seed recomendations? I know, you want to see the output of that tool that shows exactly what I have. Send me the URL of the tool, but I can't run it until badblocks finished verifying my drive.

Thansk! :D

I would recommend the latest Zen kernel (2.6.29-zen2). I don't have a seed specifically set up for it, but you can use the 2.6.29 seed and generate the same basic .config. Then, just set up the other stuff you need. But yes, post the usual (lspci -n, cat proc/cpuinfo, /etc/fstab), and I'll see what I can do.

Blessed be!
Pappy

Thanks, Pappy! It probably will not happen until the weekend; I'm very busy with requirements gathering for a new client right now.

I understand completely. I'm getting ready to set up CentOS for a client of mine. The install his ISP set up sucks. I have to fix it...and that's best done by a wipe and dipe.

And get this, it's a kernel issue. Whoever set it up butchered the .config, and then left no source on the system. What a mess!

Good luck.

Blessed be!

I just uploaded the .configs for 2.6.29-gentoo-r5 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors.

Also, as per the question by deathmetalscottie, I have also edited the page to make it clearer that kernel issues are discussed in this thread. So yes, deathmetalscottie, anyone needing that info knows where to find it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Coming soon, I am going to be setting up seeds for hardened-sources. Look for them around the Summer Solstice.

Blessed be!
Pappy

At long last, I have uploaded the .configs for 2.6.29-tuxonice-r3 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Blessed be!

Hi Pappy,

I just downloaded the seed for 2.6.26-r3 and I'm getting the kernel panic not syncing on boot. I think it's the hard disk controllers. Would you be able to tell me what drivers I need to enable? I'm not sure here.

Code:

02:09.0 Communication controller: Conexant Systems, Inc. HSF 56k HSFi Modem (rev 01)

I went to the driver locator page and I'm not enough of a hardware person to really tell if I got it right - obviously, I missed something important. I'd appreciate your expertise!

audiodef,

This post covers your Intel IDE and SATA hardware.

For your
Code:
RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6410 ATA133 RAID controller (rev 06)
you need to add
generic IDE controller code under the old IDE branch. At least, thats what the patch you linked in your post applies to.

The link you posted shows me all that is already set in Pappy's seed.

Where is "generic IDE controller code under the old IDE branch"? Is this the ATA/ATAPI/MFM/Rll Suport option with the Old hard disk (MFM/RLL/IDE) driver sub-option checked?

If there's something else, let me know. What I just said doesn't work (just tried it).

Still getting the kernel panic on boot.

I have a kernel config that isn't a Pappy's seed and it works - but I basically threw a whole bunch of stuff in there. I like the seeds and I want to make it work right rather than guess or create a driver salad.

Post the results of lspci -n to this site. That will tell you which drivers you need. As far as using ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL drivers, you can turn them on. Using the libata drivers is your best bet, even if you don't have a true SATA drive in the machine.

If your /etc/fstab points to hd(x) instead of sd(x) then you will want to use the ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL drivers. You can change things up as per Neddy's set up page. It's a walk in the park if you're using grub...A little less so if you're using lilo, but it can still be done.

If you'd like me to take a look at what you have, post your .config and /etc/fstab file as well as lspci -n and cat /proc/cpuinfo, and I'll get on it.

Blessed be!
Pappy

I did the lspci -n thing on that site and I'm still a bit stumped. I was hoping for a lead to figure things out, but I definitely appreciate the offer to take a look at my config.

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't

Should I post the .config that DID work (the one that didn't use your seed)?

audiodef,
Code:
CONFIG_HAVE_IDE=y
CONFIG_IDE=y
# CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE is not set
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD_ONLY=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_HD=y

There is a whole menu missing there.

Code:
--- ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
<*>   generic ATA/ATAPI disk support (NEW)
[*]     ATA disk support (NEW)
[*]   legacy /proc/ide/ support (NEW)
<*>   generic/default IDE chipset support (NEW)
looks like whats needed

Alright... I can now boot with the seeded kernel! Thanks, Neddy. The menus are a little different in the kernel version I'm using, but I understood what to look for.

Now... I have an hda and an hdc, and those are not mounting. If I can just identify what drivers they need, I'd be all set.

Btw, I had some trouble IDing the driver(s) for the network card on this machine. I pretty much compared my old, non-seed config and just plugged a bunch of stuff in until it worked, but I'd like to weed that out. I just don't know what driver it is, because choosing the (to me) obvious 3Com drivers did not work. I don't know which driver or which combination of drivers got my nic running.

audiodef,

Please post
Code:
lspci
without the -n, that saves me gaving to google all your vendor and device IDs to find your network card.

Btw, should I enable anything special for a Pentium 4 dual processor (or is it a dual-core? I don't know which)?

Hey, I just checked Include IDE/ATA-2 DISK support and SCSI emulation support. I don't know if it was either or both, but both my sd* and hd* drives all mount according to /etc/fstab now.

So, now I just want to weed out the nic drivers and see if I should tweak anything for the P4 dual CPU thing.

Do you still want me to look, or do you prefer to work with it yourself and see what you get? I'd hate to steal your fun away.

Blessed be!
Pappy

audiodef,

Your network card is
Code:
02:05.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c940 10/100/1000Base-T [Marvell] (rev 12)
It looks like a 3Com card but see the warning label [Marvell] at the end of the name. Refering back to your lspci -n we see
Code:
02:05.0 0200: 10b7:1700 (rev 12)
and googling
Code:
10b7:1700 +pci +linux
gets hits like This page which shows you need the
Code:
<*>   New SysKonnect GigaEthernet support
option on the
Code:
[*]   Ethernet (1000 Mbit)  --->
menu.

Either modular or build in should work but its not a 3Com chipset.

Thanks, Neddy, I appreciate that. I'll go weed out the extra drivers that aren't needed for the nic.

Pappy, I guess it's working, and I don't want to waste your valuable time. Thanks for offering to dig around, though. :D

I guess at this point, I'm just wondering about any extra stuff I should turn on to optimise this particular CPU.

audiodef,

Your flags says
Code:
flags      : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe pebs bts cid xtpr

mtrr is a kernel option, so you want that on. Its good for graphics
Also turn on MSR if its off.

You have apic so should use APIC in the kernel rather than APM, if power management matters to you.

Code:
mmx sse sse2
are USE flags. multimedia applications often have optional sections of code to take advantage of these instructions. Its a really bad idea to set these in your CFLAGS as they break some applications.

ht is for hyperthreading - you have that on as your P4 reports two CPUs. Choose the Hyperthreading scheduler in the kernel to best support it.

The .30 kernel has been released. I have .configs ready to go for 2.6.27.25, 2.6.30, 2.6.30-gentoo, and 2.6.30-gentoo-r1 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors.

Coming later this summer, Pappy's seeds moves to a personal machine. Look for further announcements this summer.

Blessed be!
Pappy
