True, but my original suggestion was *NOT* for a forum; it was for a place to upload configs. UPLOAD *ONLY*!

Spam is only useful to the spammer if people can see it. Sysadms are not likely to respond to spam, soif the board is upload-only, then the users never get to see the spam, so what's thepoint of posting it?

Therein lies the reason I don't want to go there. If people want to upload porn, cool. I might add it to my collection. If they want to keep uploading reasons I should use Viagra, then I have no desire to be anywhere near them. It's not like I don't get enough of that in my email.

Blessed be!

And then, of course, you can use the old "email Pappy to get a password, which will be revoked if you misbehave..."

I have a salmon and steelhead fishing page that has a chat feature, and maybe fishermen are different, but I have had very little trouble with it, and its been running sinc 2002.

That and why you need to meet more (demographic here) singles.

Btw, when you get a chance, check out this thread. It may be useful info for the kind of intel chip I have. I ended up not needing to set ANY support for framebuffer in the kernel (this was the machine you recommended a .27 kernel for, which may still be good advice, but for those who want/need a later kernel for whatever reason...)

There might come a time when I move to using an online form. It would, at very least, save the the trouble of following behind folks reminding them to send file x, y, or z.

I will go there eventually, but for now, I think I've got enough on my project plate to last a few weeks, if not months.

Blessed be!

According to the guidelines for using KMS, you have to make sure you have no support for framebuffer enabled, which is what I've done. Gotten it to work on my older intel desktop and on a newer intel laptop with tuxonice. In both cases, the kernel version is .31-r3 (gentoo and tuxonice respectively. The one with the above info is the older intel desktop).

No prob!

Interestingly, this particular machine (my Intel i810 desktop) encounters a blank screen or disconnects from xorg when xdm starts no matter what drivers or kernel version I use, every now and then. I've decided at this point it's something to live with. :P

Yeah...that's weird. It's also why I use startx. From the earliest times of playing with Linux, I've always preferred to have the machine start without going directly to X. It reminds me of the not-so-good old days when DOS and Windoze 3.11 ruled the planet. It always blows peoples' minds when I fire up to Linux. You can almost see the question marks flying over their heads. hehehe

Blessed be!

Another day, another .config. I've added .configs for 2.6.31-gentoo-r4 in both x86 and x86_64 flavors. Enjoy!

Blessed be!

I might go back to doing it that way myself. 8)

I always start my X servers the good old fashioned way:
Code:
$ X :0 &
or use some other display number if appropriate.

I then start the window manager of my choice manually as well:
Code:
$ DISPLAY=:0 ctwm &
I'm a true minimalist when it comes to my window manager. 8)

Of course, I have ctwm configured to run 26 virtual desktops, but I really do use them all, and wish I had more sometimes. :?

Pappy: Regarding that quad-core AMD motherboard with the flakey ethernet problem...

I ran the livecd for 24 hours without a glitch, so now I am running the kernel you gave me the .config for with exactly the same network activity, and we shall see what happens.

I'm still not convinced that there isn't a configuration problem somewhere. :|

eth2 Lock-Up

Pappy, eth2 on my quad-core AMD box just locked up while running the same exact load as the livecd ran for 24 hours. The .config you are helping me with ran 7:22:00 hours.

So I think there is a configuration problem. It might not be directly connected with the ethernet driver. Maybe its a race condition from the 4 cores, or some other bug.

I have an Intel quad-core that runs fine, and has for 1.5 years, but its ethernet hardware is different.

So what's our next step with this? Where do we go from here?

It locked up again at uptime 8:01:00, so it only ran about 40 minutes this time before it had a fit. :(

Should I check on maybe another thread -- one that specialized in general kernel stuff? Maybe there is an issue here that some others know about...

Check kernel versions. If the version on the CD worked, find its version, and see if you can get it to fire. If it does, then there's a kernel version issue. That's not unheard of.

The .31 kernel doesn't like lm_sensors or the kernel modules that make it work. The CPU temp module works, but no others. The .30 version kernels work just fine with lm_sensors and its modules.

Trying another kernel version would be the next logical step.

Blessed be!

Are you sure that it's not your network card that is dying.

You should copy a lot of stuff between 2 Pcs and test if your lan card is crashing.

Well, I've pumped 1 TB thru the card under livecd, but the custom kernel will not last that long.

livecd is:
Code:
Linux livecd 2.6.24-gentoo-r7 #1 SMP Thu Jul 3 18:36:20 UTC 2008 x86_64 AMD Phenom(tm) 9650 Quad-Core Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Custon kernel from Pappy's Seeds is:
Code:
linux-2.6.29-gentoo-r5

I am running the livecd on it right now, so I can't do a uname -a on the custom pappy kernel. :?

Yeah, either that or fall back to 2.6.24-r7, which is what the livecd is running. :?

Hi all.

I think I need kernel specialists to check this: I've installed OpenVZ from a recent Gentoo LiveCD and didn't pay attention: I formatted filesystems with ext4 but OpenVZ kernel (2.6.27) has only ext4dev support! Does anybody know if ext4 has been backported to 2.6.27, especially for OpenVZ?
