whenever i try to start kde from kdm I get thrown into a normal x session with one window. If I check the logs i get something like:

Sep 14 13:22:10 mail kdm: :0[30142]: pam_unix(kde:session): session opened for user *** by (uid=0)
Sep 14 13:22:10 mail kdm: :0 '[30167]: Session "/usr/share/config/kdm/Xsession" execution failed: Permission denied

This is under kde 4.1.1 from the kde testing overlay. While I understand this might not be supported if there is anyone knowing what the problem is please reply. I have tried to change that file permisions to full but it did not help.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software as KDE-4.x is currently masked.

As for your issue, are you able to start a session from the terminal instead of using KDM?

Yes. If I login as an user and and then use startx it works fine.

Have you tried to run: chmod +x /usr/share/config/kdm/Xsession ?

Yes. Actually I was so desperate that I did an chmod 777 on that file and still it didn't work.

Work your way up the chain, the problem on my machine was that the directory /usr/share/config was not available to anyone but root, so I had to do...

Code:
chmod +r /usr/share/config

and then I was up and running!

That didnt' help. But syncing the layman and re-emerging kdelibs and kdm solved the problem. I think it was a path issue and as stated in the ebuilds logs they fixed it.
