Hi Folks,

I am trying to install Win4Lin5 to run a commercial program. Win4lin only produce .deb or .rpm files.

I have followed an article in the Gentoo-wiki-tips&tricks and used the .rpm option

I have had the following occur:
Code:
hadleigh non-portage # rpm -ivh Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
   /bin/sh is needed by Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64
   / is needed by Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64

And I am not sure how to set about to fix the reported error.

I have also used the -Uvh option.

Can someone please assist?

Regards
Raoul

Just as a question: Did you try using the windows software with wine allready? Also, perhaps you could find wine-doors or CrossOver Office useful..

Try with --nodeps or --force

Hi ZeuZ_NG,

This program definitely does not like wine....it needs to install .Net1 and 2 as well as SQL Server and wine just doesn't cope. I have previously tried cedega also unsuccessfully. There is a thread that helps to install win4lin4 on the Gentoo forums, but I have already established on an Ubuntu system that the version operating most stably for the software is Win4lin 5

SlashBeast,

Here is the output of --nodeps:
Code:
hadleigh non-portage # rpm -ivh --nodeps --root=/usr/non-portage Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64.rpm
error: can't create transaction lock on /usr/non-portage
Preparing...                ########################################### [100%]
error: %pre(Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64) scriptlet failed, exit status 255
error:   install: %pre scriptlet failed (2), skipping Win4LinPro-5.0-65034

And here is the output of --force:
Code:
hadleigh non-portage # rpm -Uvh --force --root=/usr/non-portage Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64.rpm
error: Failed dependencies:
   /bin/sh is needed by Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64
   / is needed by Win4LinPro-5.0-65034.x86_64

Still stuck, I'm afraid....

Regards

What about cross-over office?
I've been able to install .Net framework [1|2] with the use of Wine-doors, though.
As for SQL Server, well, I'll be on the search.

I know there's a utility called rpm2targz... I've never used it, but you might want to have a look at it.

OK...

I'm not making too much progress here.

I have tried wine and wine-doors. I tried a couple of years ago with wine and during the installation it asks for the licence key for the program, I give it and it tells me it is not the correct one. I know that it is correct. Trying most recently with wine-doors resulted in EXACTLY the same problem.

So, faced with that I went back to a solution that has worked previously, namely using ebuilds from bugs.gentoo.

Using this as a guide as well as this post to these forums, I tried the ebuild route.

This is what I get:
Code:
hadleigh rap # cd /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/win4lin
hadleigh win4lin # wget -o win4lin-pro-4.0_p63935.ebuild http://bugs.gentoo.org/attachment.cgi?id=122161
hadleigh win4lin # ebuild win4lin-pro-4.0_p63935.ebuild digest
!!! /usr/local/portage/app-emulation/win4lin/win4lin-pro-4.0_p63935.ebuild does not seem to have a valid PORTDIR structure.

Here is the back end of my /etc/make.conf
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="nvidia"
LINGUAS="en_GB"
source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf

And here is /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf
Code:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/portage/local/layman/pro-audio$PORTDIR_OVERLAY"
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"

I am getting a little lost as to what I am missing.

If I can get this working, then I would like to upgrade it to win4lin5, but that is the next step.

Thanks in advance.

Raoul

Remove
Code:
PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage"
from /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf and place it into /etc/make.conf ... maybe that'll help. Not sure why you have it in the layman file.

Hi AM088

I made the change as you suggested. No change to output. The reason I did it that way was because that is how it was described in the "Installing 3rd party ebuilds" on Gentoo-wiki.

Ok. I have given up completely on Win4Lin and gone to Virtualbox. A better supported and seemingly more robust option.
