I've just tried booting my PowerMac G3 B&W (first Mac with the New Word ROM) into the minimal install CD, but holding 'C' doesn't get it to boot the disk. The read light is on for a while, but it still ends up booting into OS X. I've even tried burning the minimal install CD multiple machines, with the same result.

What have I missed?

Moved from Installing Gentoo to Gentoo on PPC.

Possibly the cdrom drive has problems reading cdr/cdrw media. You could try to boot into the OF and boot the cd with: boot cd:,\\yaboot

Holding the 'option' key doesn't get me into OpenFirmware; it still boots into OS X when I hold the key.

I can confirm this same problem getting the G3 to boot the 2008.0. I have had the same machine (and same cd-drive) boot and install from previous Gentoo disks and Debian. This strikes me as a Gentoo issue.

At any rate, this can probably be worked around by using the 2007.0 disc and using the 2008.0 stage from the internet. I am going to try that now.

OK, I just was able to boot the 2008.0 disk. I changed which terminal on the IDE cable was plugged into the drive, and perhaps that made the difference. That strikes me as odd, since the jumper is set to master. At any rate, perhaps try that.

Have you tried holding down control + option + O + F to get into OpenFirmware. Then run 'boot cd:,//yaboot' ?

I managed to boot it using a CD-RW, but it gets to "Attempting to mount media:- /dev/hda", then fails. It probes hda one more time, then fails with "Media not found" and "Could not find CD to boot, something else needed!"

The DVD-ROM drive is indeed /dev/hda. What's going on?
