DVD decryption is done in software via libdvdcss. Therefore, this should work just fine on any architecture and machine, including the PS3. If blueray playback is what you are looking for you're boned; afaik, there is nothing capable of that for linux at this time.

So it is in theory,

however, I canno't manage to make it work. I tried under fedora, yellow dog and currently gentoo...with no success.

libdvdread, libdvdnav and libdvdcss are installed.

before going into details, it would be great to have some feedback of people who are watching encrypted dvds on their gentoo ps3.

Thanks

JJ

What DVD title are you trying? Some recent DVD releases have another protection layer on top of the CSS encryption: 'ARccOS', which deliberately inserts corrupt sectors.
A recent VLC should be able to read these 'corrupt' DVD's, but you have to make sure it uses the dvdnav library.

PS: let us know if you managed to make it work. I plan to replace my plucky little media-PC with a PS3 in the near future. Ripping DVD's is a must.

My test is with zone 1 DVD Wimbledon, my ps3 is a zone 1 (bought in the US as well as the DVD).

I have tons of DVDs, that I legally bought in UK and US while I was living there.

I am trying to do that so that I through away my UK dvd player and only have one appliance, a ps3 media center.

I decided to try first a DVD from the same region to narrow down problems in case of any with no luck. Then I will try with zone 2 dvds, so I could use linux for the zone 2 and the ps3 bilt in player for zone 1.

After reading your answer, i'll give a try to my oldest dvds to see if what I have is enough for these.
If not what would you like me to post to find out what is going wrong ?

Thanks

JJ

I googled around a bit. Apparently, the Blu-ray drive is managed by the hypervisor. It seems to block those sectors that contain the CSS bits. (VLC and mplayer crashing on IO errors when trying to read the CSS keys).
Some people are using an external USB DVD drive to burn CDs/DVDs under linux. Unfortunatly no reports about using that external drive to read encrypted DVD's.
If you happen to have a USB DVD drive around, it might be worth to try it.

Found this interesting post today on the YellowDog forum:

Yes, I have been able to successfully play/backup encrypted commercial DVDs under PS3 Linux. Here's my setup.

PS3 firmware 2.50
Xubuntu Linux 7.10
vlc w/ libdvdcss libdvdnav and libdvdread installed
Xbox 360 external HD-DVD/DVD player

I was never able to play encrypted DVDs with the PS3's Blu-ray drive under Linux, so I bought the 360 drive for exclusive PS3 Linux use instead. It was cheap, doubles as a USB hub, and works great with PS3 Linux! Go Microsoft!
