And i need some help with a few things.

First off. is there a site/forum that is dedicated to running gentoo on a ps3?

First problem, my screen is not filled with the image, i guess i need to do some work on my xorg.conf. I want to run it at full resolution which is 1920x1080, any idea where i can get info or how to get this resolution?

Next, i was going to just try and emerge netscape-flash for a starter emerge to see how it all works on ps3, anyways, i saw a message I have not yet seen on my pc. It says the packages are masked, but not by a ~arch, it says its masked by missing keyword...I added the package to my package.keywords without any ~arch entry or anything after it, but it didn't work, how do i get around this?

I am actually posting this from my couch on my ps3 :D

At least I am partway there, trying to set up a media center pc more or less with it.

thanks

Moved from Gentoo on Alternative Architectures to Gentoo on PPC.

alright, i could really use some help here.

I also have another problem. I cannot get ps3pfutils to emerge for me, it says it does not exist. I have added the cell overlay using layman, and it is still not there. I even did layman --sync cell, and it synced, but still, says that ps3pfutils does not exist. I have also added the line to my make.conf

cat /etc/make.conf
Code:

# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example.
CFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=970 -mtune=970 -mabi=altivec"
CXXFLAGS="-O2 -pipe -mcpu=970 -mtune=970 -mabi=altivec"
# This should not be changed unless you know exactly what you are doing.  You
# should probably be using a different stage, instead.
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing it.
CHOST="powerpc-unknown-linux-gnu"
USE="altivec X fbcon"
PORTAGE_BINHOST="http://ftp-chi.osuosl.org/pub/gentoo-ps3/grp32/All/"
FEATURES="parallel-fetch"
source /usr/portage/local/layman/make.conf

help with this would be wonderful, and I have also made no progress on the problems in my first post.

thanks for any and all help

alright, the package is actually called ps3pf_utils. The kboot.conf file says that it is called ps3pfutils, which is apparently incorrect. Took me a while to figure this out...lol

Now, for some more questions. Next, how come i cannot run any commands from it? For example, the one that is in the kboot.conf file, im guessing that maybe it is an incorrect command, as the name of the entire package isn't even correct. Is there a list of all the commands within this package somewhere so that I can see what type of things are actually in here?

I have tried to do:
Code:

ps3videomode -v

and it outputs: bash: ps3videomode: command not found

also, how do i get back to my ps3 dashboard now, so that i can play games? I saw something in another post about using

Code:

bootgameos

low and behold: bash: bootgameos: command not found

I could really use some help here...

thanks

I don't remember the exact syntax, But type "ps3" and hit the tab twice. It will show the the command to boot into your dash, also one of those commands is for changing video mode for your first post (with -v flag it prints the available modes).
I think they were:
ps3-boot-gameos
ps3-video-<something>

awesome, thanks for the help, here is a list of the commands

ps3-boot-game-os
ps3-flash-util
ps3-video-mode

other questions are still valid, though I have already changed to 720p as the entire desktop is now easier to read from a distance. Though it is still not filling the screen.

One thing i forgot from above, the ps3pf_utils package is actually in portage now, and not even part of the overlay, so it is unnecessary. though it does have the kernel sources and some other goodies.

If I may suggest, you should review http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-linux-docs/ps3-linux-docs-08.06.09/PlatformSpecificUtilities.html and other documents found in http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/.

Although I've played around with different video modes, I have had best luck with mode:0 (auto) at least for console mode (no X) for best legibility (and most of the time, I ssh to it anyways). If you are quite serious about performance of your PS3 in graphical mode, may I suggest signing the petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/RSX/petition.html? Right now (IMHO) running X or XFCE is the bare minimum tolerance (for me) in usability in GUI mode (besides, if I wanted to browse the net or watch YouTube on my PS3, I'd do it from the dashboard rather than from the "Other OS" side).

Also, calling ps3-boot-game-os will switch the boot-flag back to PS3, which comes in handy if your primary usages of PS3 is for gaming and "Other OS" is just for experimentations...

peace!

P/S: I'm using Fedora PPC right now and was thinking of switching to Gentoo PPC in hopes that I can get the CELL Broadband Engine SDK3.x (see http://www.bsc.es/plantillaG.php?cat_id=96) on the latest kernel rather than being stuck at Fedora7 and older gcc so I can crossdev on my Gentoo box (amd64) as well as on the PS3 (so that glib matches). Are there any developers who are doing crossdev on Gentoo for PS3 here and succeeded?

To get out of the black borders mode, you can go into "full screen mode." You need to add 128 to your kboot.conf. Depending on your tv, this may cause the image to be larger than the tv though.

Code:
video=ps3fb:mode:3

to

Code:
video=ps3fb:mode:131

I wouldn't suggest 1080 res. because that would actually make the letters smaller...

I signed the petition, and thanks for the links as well!!!

As for 1080, yes, i have already ditched it, i was only able to see from about 6 ft away, on my 46" tv...lol...720 is legible, though I still have to zoom in on the browser.

Do you guys think playing HD .mkv files through mplayer will be possible? Thats really the only reason that I even installed linux on the ps3, to make it a media center pc as well.

thanks for all the replies, any other tips/tricks are greatly appreciated.

peace

EDIT: After some trial and error, and lots of reboots, I have found out that 1080p fullscreen mode is the only one that fits correctly on my tv. Any lower res its too big, it goes past the edges...maybe its because the 'native' resolution of my tv is 1920x1080, so that makes sense...somewhat.

If you just want to make it a media center, may I suggest that rather than approaching it the current method, install MediaTomb on your server side on your LAN? PS3 can search/detect media servers (I use MediaTomb, works great), PS3 can then play video as well as music (MediaTomb can switch the stream codec on the fly (transcode) to support clients' supported formats) from the dashboard under each catagories (music, video, pictures). IMHO, I believe SONY is doing a great job in making PS3 a media center without installing Linux on it... You can even watch YouTube (Flash) video with their browser, if you have web-mail you can read e-mail, etc. For majority of the consumers usage of the Internet, I think it's all there in the dashboard :D

People have succesfully played .mkv formats via MediaTomb and PS3, so it may be a better choice.

Yeah, i have a FreeNAS server, which uses mediatomb for DLNA server. It works well, but I seriously have LOTS of media, and if i try to serve it all all of the time, it does not work, it will crash the server..

200GB music
~750GB movies

however, If i don't try to serve the music, all my movies are fine. But so far I agree, linux on ps3 seems near useless right now. Im actually debating giving up gentoo all together right now, would rather not, but I spend all eventing every evening just getting things to work, instead of actually using my computer, im back on winblows right now, where sadly, everything works easily.

thanks for all the help, any other tips are great, and I will keep playing around with gentoo on ps3 just for fun.

peace

Oh, I know what you mean by giving up, I too feel that way sometimes, and I too spend quite a long time messing with it. I guess just like you (and others), we just love to push the limit. When I read blogs like http://julipedia.blogspot.com/2008/02/software-bloat-2.html, I cannot agree more on how often it hits the SWAP and slows things down. I don't run GUI and even in console mode, it sometimes slows down.

So one last tip, it's more of a "don't" tip...

According to this page http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/geoff/cell/ps3-linux-docs/ps3-linux-docs-08.06.09/PlatformSpecificUtilities.html, it has a command:
Quote:
ps3-boot-game-os [-n, --no-reboot | -p, --poweroff] [-h, --help] [-V, --version]

What ever you do, don't use the "-n" (--no-reboot) option. I think it is a bug, but it does cause a reboot the moment you execute it, and if your video mode is in some unknown state (I cannot tell you which mode it was on because I usually ssh to the PS3). Because it has rebooted, I had to go the PS3 in my living room to choose "Other OS" to launch kboot.

But the screen was blanked... I hear the audio so I know it was running, thus it was video in bad state causing blank screen. So I hit the ON/OFF button for 5 seconds (wait for the 2 beeps), let it go to the menu where you can select "Reset ..." selection (here, I can see the video) and reset it to default state (it's supposed to revert back to 480i NTSC).

No matter how many tries I've done, I can no longer see the video output. My last resort is to "Restore PS3" to default state, which will format my harddrive (and I cannot backup Rockband), so I've been procrastinating on messing with PS3 now 8O

In any case, I'm not sure if it only happens on Fedora, but I thought I'd give you the heads-up, seeing that you work so hard on your PS3, I would hate to see you in same situation as mine :D Good luck with yours!

[EDIT]It looks like it wasn't because of --no-reboot parameter, the harddrive or some of the data are corrupted or something (the XSD graphics are showing garbage data). I suspect it got corrupted because the last thing I remember doing before rebooting was installing libspe2 and elfspe2 for testing[/EDIT]
