I have a G4-733, 1.5 gig RAM, two hard drives. One has OSX, the other has gentoo, 40 and 80 gb, respectively. The larger, gentoo, drive is the original one, that's where fstab lives. If I run mac-fdisk, both drives show up...but if I look in the fstab file, the second drive, the 40 gig one with OS X, does not...!?! What's that about? I guess I make fstab by hand, is that it?

I would like to install Fedora 9 or 10 beta on the Gentoo disk, but absolutely cannot. I tried net-install...nothing doing, individual CDs, ditto, all rejected as bad disks (though they appear to have burned correctly, and have all relevant directories when viewed on another Mac, running OS X.)

Now I burned a DVD of 10Beta, and it hangs when I try to install it from an external DVD player (none internal on my G4.) starting with option depressed shows me a choice of OS X, gentoo and the firewire DVD, but when I click on the DVD it hangs. Machine starts fine without DVD attached...DVD works fine with another disk in it...it's not the drive.

So what is going on here? I burned at least five CDs, all were found bad by the integrity check...now the DVD also doesn't work...the fstab doesn't show what it ought to, can it be a master-slave thing between the drives? In mac-fdisk, one shows as hda, the other as hdb...isn't that correct for master and slave, respectively?

help, please!

yup, fstab is edited by hand.

You'll have to ask on the fedora forums on how to install that distribution.

Maybe there's something wrong with your optical drive?
