I am about to choose a virtual machine SW to my Gentoo installation to be able to run Vista in a window.

I have browsed both the Gentoo forum and Googled to get my initial questions answered. But unfortunately I do not get the complete picture yet. One reason is that many posts are old, several years sometimes. Can any one help me answer these questions:

1. Is it possible to install and use Vista on qemu and vmware workstation, respectively?

2. I would like to separate a Vista installation on the virtual machine to a dedicated partition (the partition I have for W2K now, in a dual boot config). Is this possible? And how would I achieve this?

3. Which one of qemu or vmware-workstation is the most stable on a Gentoo box, for running a micosoft OS?

4. Where can I find a comprehensive installation and configuration guide for either qemu or vmware for a Gentoo box?

5. I have presumed qemu and vmware are the two primary choices for a virtual machin on a gentoo installation. Have I missed any other virtual machine option that would possibly be a better choice than either of qemu or vmware?

Thanks for help

I don't know about qemu. VMWare depends very much on the specific kernel version you are running. Search bugs.gentoo.org for vmware-modules to find examples of this. I run Windows 2000 and Windows XP using VMWare Workstation with much success. The Windows 2000 install is actually on the hard disk in a dual-boot configuration - works in VMWare with no problems.

VirtualBox is another good virtualization option.

I've tried them all and VirtualBox is my personal favorite.

Your Phenom supports hardware virtualisation extensions, in which case, I'd use either VirtualBox or kvm, the former is a tad better polished off usability wise, the latter is more flexible and can be easy enough to use with libvirt/virt-manager once configured.

The main thing you miss out on is the headless VRDP support, where you can connect to the VM using RDP. If you don't use the VM as a server of some sort (and it sounds like you're not) then it's probably not a lot of use for your.

You can always switch from one to teh other if you decide to.

Cheers,
