how about the greatest challenge:
kernel-compilation
was it successful for anyone ?
for me it produced an internal compiler error (2.6.29-rc8-zen1)

gentoo-sources-2.6.28-r3 and -r4 compiles fine.

i use gcc-4.4-svn for most of my apps and i am quite satisfied with it.
kde4-live runs with gcc-4.4-svn without problems and also my kernels
comprising the zen-sources. the benefits are pretty obvious.
it's true however that it's svn so that's to say i accept to go bleeding edge
and 'am ready to fix broken stuff.

the -fno-strict-aliasing is however needed to get most things to compile.

it won't be out for a while after that yet. the license exception is needed for them to _branch_ 4.4. release is still a few RC's off.

Yeah I know. Can't they just wait until its ready and release that with the next version?

I haven't had to use -fno-strict-aliasing at all, and I think my system is 99% GCC 4.4 by now.

All my 800 packages in @installed compiled fine except 6.

Two with missing includes:

net-libs/libjingle-0.3.11-r1:
Code:
if /bin/sh ../../libtool --silent --tag=CXX --mode=compile x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I../.. -I../..    -DPOSIX  -march=core2 -O2 -pipe  -MT stream.lo -MD -MP -MF ".deps/stream.Tpo" -c -o stream.lo stream.cc; \
        then mv -f ".deps/stream.Tpo" ".deps/stream.Plo"; else rm -f ".deps/stream.Tpo"; exit 1; fi
stream.cc: In member function 'virtual bool FileStream::Open(const char*, const char*)':
stream.cc:105: error: 'fopen' was not declared in this scope
stream.cc: In member function 'virtual bool FileStream::DisableBuffering()':

stream.cc:112: error: 'setvbuf' was not declared in this scope
...

sci-mathematics/octave-3.0.3:

oct-md5.cc:55: error: ‘fopen’ was not declared in this scope
oct-md5.cc:73: error: ‘fread’ was not declared in this scope
...

One with compiler check:

app-emulation/virtualbox-ose-2.1.4-r2:
Code:
Checking for gcc:
  ** gcc version 4.4.0-pre9999 found, expected gcc 3.x with x>1 or gcc 4.x with 0<x<4!

One because of a missing expression on an elif:

games-emulation/sdlmame-0.129
Code:
Compiling src/mame/video/model2.c...
In file included from src/mame/video/model2.c:863:
src/mame/video/model2rd.c:51:6: error: #elif with no expression

(this is the elif without expression):

#elif MODEL2_FUNC == 7
#define MODEL2_CHECKER
#define MODEL2_TEXTURED
#define MODEL2_TRANSLUCENT
#elif
#error "Model 2 renderer: Invalif function selected!"
#endif

(obviously should be an #else)

And two from the gnome-overlay:

cc1: warnings being treated as errors
core/keybindings.c: In function ‘error_on_command’:

Not bad. I still have to test everything, though (the compiled packages are on a remote machine, I'll download them to my laptop).

Talk to Zorry, I think he has a testing branch in xake-overlay for 4.4 with pie-patch and so on, as I cannot see any proof of dirtyepic having that in the toolchain overlay.

To all those other brave gcc-4.4 warriors out there probably also running kde-4.2.1 with qt-*-4.5(not necessarily .9999): Up until now my konqueror was completely unusable and would crash on almost any attempt to load a site. Then I got curious what adding 'custom-cxxflags' could achieve, recompiled my qt-*-4.5.9999 packages from qting-edge and there it is, my blazingly fast *and* stable konqui. :)

How safe is it to use gcc-4.4.0 with firefox-3.1-beta3 and amarok-9999?

amarok:live runs perfectly stable so far, firefox-3.0.8 too if that's any help. Which improvements does 3.1 promise so that I may try it out myself? ;)

For the record, media-sound/wavpack fails to build on 4.4 with USE="mmx". I've reported the bug upstream (unfortunately it seems that the only bugreporting mechanism for wavpack is to email the developer). As soon as there's some fix/patch available I'll file a bug on b.g.o. Temporary workaround is to add this to /etc/portage/package.use:
Code:
media-sound/wavpack -mmx

any estimates about when gcc 4.4 will enter main tree?

GCC 4.4.0 has not officially been released yet, pending license clarification from the FSF steering committee. I'm pretty certain the Gentoo devs won't add an ebuild to the main tree until the official release. See http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc/2009-03/msg00397.html for more info.

Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be an official (or even unofficial) timetable for the license clarification.

gcc.gnu.org:
Current release series: GCC 4.4.0

Doesn't it mean that code is finalized for release and ebuild could be added pmasked to tree?
