Hi,

I've installed Gentoo on an iMac that used to run OS/X.

The problem is that although this machine was able to output sound and therefore has a soundcard, I can't seem to find it or figure out how to enable it on Linux...

So where is the soundcard?
How do I configure ALSA?
The guide gives a grep command to identify the soundcard from the lspci output but as you can guess that gives no output in this case.

Thank you for taking the time to read

You'll want the AOA Toonie driver:
Code:
Device Drivers  --->
    Sound  --->
        <*> Sound card support
        Advanced Linux Sound Architecture  --->
            <*>   Sequencer support
            <*>   OSS Mixer API
<*>   OSS PCM (digital audio) API
[*]     OSS PCM (digital audio) API - Include plugin system
             [*]   OSS Sequencer API
            Apple Onboard Audio driver  --->
                <*> Apple Onboard Audio driver
                <*>   layout-id fabric
                <*>   support Toonie chip
                 -*- Apple Soundbus support
                 -*-   I2S bus support

And you'll probably have to unmute things with alsamixer (or another mixer) before you'll hear sound out of it.

Thanks for the tip, nixnut.

However, when I enable the items you mentioned and perform the following:
make && make modules_install
cp vmlinux /boot/kernel-2.6.24-gentoo-r3

Then reboot.
The system no longer boots.
It gives
Quote:

Welcome to yaboot version 1.3.14
Enter "help" to get some basic usage information
boot: Linux
Please wait, loading kernel...
Read failed
boot:
I must then boot it with the live-cd, perform the following:
mount /dev/hda4 /mnt/gentoo
and then recopy the previous kernel I had compiled
cp /boot/kernel.previous /boot/kernel-2.6.24-gentoo-r3

Good thing I made a copy!

Any idea why enabling those modules causes the machine to no longer be able to boot?

Did you rerun ybin after copying the new kernel?

No, it doesn't seem to be necessary: the kernel didn't change names and I didn't make any changes to /etc/yaboot.conf

I have been able to make other changes to the kernel configuration, rebuild the kernel and copy it over to the /boot folder where it would overwrite the one already there and reboot without problems, all without running ybin again.

You are correct, afaik yaboot is capable of reading ext2/3/reiser/etc., so it should not be necessary to rerun ybin. Still, your error looks like it happens when the bootloader tries to load the image, before the actual kernel boot. So, running ybin might at least give you a hint what's wrong with your image / image location...

Finally, I solved the problem of the iMac not being able to boot every time I modified a kernel option by
booting with the live-cd
tar/gzipping /mnt/gentoo to a USB key
reformatting /dev/hda4 to ext2 (it was XFS)
restoring the files back onto /mnt/gentoo

Now I CAN modify kernel options, copy the new kernel over the old one in /boot, reboot and the system will still come up like it should.

It appears formatting the '/' partition in XFS made it too brittle somehow...
I never got how OpenFirmware could possibly read a kernel image off of a partition formatted in a format OpenFirmware doesn't know how to read anyway, but it did work... Sometimes...

OK so on to the soundcard!
After following nixnut's recommendations and the PowerPC FAQ, when I boot the system I get these dmesgs:
Code:

[...]
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.15 (Tue Nov 20 19:16:42 2007 UTC).
snd-aoa-fabric-layout: found bus with layout 58
snd-aoa-fabric-layout: Using direct GPIOs
snd-aoa-fabric-layout: can use this codec
ALSA device list:
  #0: SoundByLayout
[...]
drivers/rtc/hctosys.c: unable to open rtc device (rtc0)

But I still have no volume control/slider on the Gnome desktop. The sound control panel has headphone and speakers toggles, but no volume controls... Is that normal?
What's missing?

Sorry I didn't see this earlier!
The answer as to how you can boot kernels from filesystems like XFS relies on the boot sequence:
1. Open Firmware starts
2. Open Firmware loads the ofboot.b file from your "Blessed" boot partition. This is formatted HFS (which OF can read!) and sets up OF for running yaboot.
3. The first stage ofboot.b loads the yaboot executable and runs it
4. Yaboot reads your configuration file from the blessed boot partition (yaboot.conf)
5. Yaboot presents its menu and boots the machine

Yaboot (not OF) is the program that can read XFS (and ReiserFS, and Ext2, and Ext3, etc.). Unfortunately, to save space and effort, the XFS implementation doesn't support 100% of XFS' features, including files that are fragmented. The recommended fix when using XFS filesystems is listed in the FAQ: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#xfs

For your sound problem, check the FAQ again:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-ppc-faq.xml#alsa

The iMac is an older mac, I'm pretty sure it won't work with AOA, try setting it up using this:
Quote:

ALSA PowerMac devices --->
<*> PowerMac (AWACS, DACA, Burgundy, Tumbler, Keywest)

Instead of the AOA driver (as your dmesg indicates).

JoseJX,
Thank you for the very detailed and clear explanation of the boot process!
Are you saying that the problems I had were all due to my kernel image being fragmented?
I can always save/reformat/restore and go back to XFS then...

For the soundcard, I changed the config as you suggested, only now dmesg gives this
Code:
Linux version 2.6.24-gentoo-r3 (root@tiny) (gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.1)) #15 Sun Nov 9 19:40:41 EST 2008
[...]
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.15 (Tue Nov 20 19:16:42 2007 UTC).
snd-powermac no longer handles any machines with a layout-id property in the device-tree, use snd-aoa.
ALSA device list:
  No soundcards found.
[...]
ssb: Sonics Silicon Backplane found on PCI device 0001:10:12.0
Not sure what a Sonics Silicon Backplane is, I added that because I thought it was curious, probably no relation to the problem.

Maybe I need another module? I have the I2C... what could be missing?

Regarding your XFS question, yes, it should work if you write an unfragmented copy to the disk, following the instructions in the FAQ.

Hmm, interesting, it seems that they've removed the layout support in the older driver (it used to work on your machine!). So, go back to the AOA driver. Make sure that you have all of the codecs listed selected. Once you've started your machine with the new kernel, open a terminal and use alsamixer to set your sound levels. Make sure that the sound card shown is in fact your card! If you've enabled the "dummy" sound card in the ALSA configuration, it can be selected as your primary card instead of the actual sound card. If this doesn't help, please paste the output of:
Code:

# cat /proc/asound/cards
# cat /proc/asound/devices

Thanks

Reverting back to AOA, it is like it was previously, meaning I can not select any other 'card' than the SoundByLayout one...

cat /proc/asound/cards
Code:
 0 [SoundByLayout  ]: AppleOnbdAudio - SoundByLayout
                      SoundByLayout
cat /proc/asound/devices
Code:
  0: [ 0]   : control
  1:        : sequencer
 16: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
 24: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture
 33:        : timer

nixnut,

You are correct, it is one of those tiny Macs... I don't know Macs very well, I wasn't aware that there was a difference between an iMac and a Mac Mini, I honestly thought they were the same thing. Sorry.

Ah, yes, that's the reason why I thought you should have been using the older driver. :| A mini is much newer. :)

What controls does alsamixer show? I know the gnome mixer isn't showing anything, but I'd like to make sure with the alsamixer utility. It's part of the alsa-utils package if you don't have it installed. Also, what user are you trying to change the volume with? Does that user have permission to do so? (i.e. is that user a member of the audio group?)

JoseJX, thanks for the help.

The alsamixer util displays the same number of soundcard and controls as the Gnome one.

I'm pretty sure something is missing from my config, here is the dmesg output, sorry for the long post

OK, I installed mplayer on a hunch, and mplayer HAS sound!

vlc and totem on the other hand do NOT have sound....

And there is no global volume control...

What does it all mean?

Hello,

I rencently reinstall my Mini Mac (the old one with G4 proc) running Linux only (no OSX inside).

Since a couple of day i try to make sound work and now i'm stuck...

The sound was working fine on my previous install so i don't understand what happened

I follow the Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide but
Code:
lspci -v | grep -i audio
give me nothing

Here is my lspci

Code:

when i try to use alsaconf anyway it says "No supported PnP or PCI card found." and give me this message in the console "modinfo: could not find module snd".

here is my dmesg output :

Hello,

I rencently reinstall my Mini Mac (the old one with G4 proc) running Linux only (no OSX inside).

Since a couple of day i try to make sound work and now i'm stuck...

The sound was working fine on my previous install so i don't understand what happened

I follow the Gentoo Linux ALSA Guide but
Code:
lspci -v | grep -i audio
give me nothing
...
when i try to use alsaconf anyway it says "No supported PnP or PCI card found." and give me this message in the console "modinfo: could not find module snd".
...
with "cat /proc/asound/cards" and "cat /proc/asound/devices" it gives :

Code:
 0 [SoundByLayout  ]: AppleOnbdAudio - SoundByLayout
                      SoundByLayout

Good to see that there is at least another single user who runs Gentoo on a Mac Mini G4. :)

Since I have sound here on my system working at this very moment, I guess it is a configuration problem.

1. alsaconf complains that it could not find a kernel module called "snd". Naturally when you compiled the sound drivers into the kernel there won't be a kernel module. So just ignore that message or fix the /etc/modprobe.d/* file (whatever you want to call it) and add there "alias snd off".
2. The entry in /proc/asound/cards is identical to mine so I guess it is safe to assume that there is no ALSA (kernel)driver problem.
3. Perhaps the soundcard is already active? Please try to run alsamixer (if installed, otherwise please emerge media-sound/alsa-utils). Check that nothing is muted. In case you have speakers connected, mute the "Speakers". "Speakers" is the built-in speaker. If you do not have speakers connected, increase the "Speakers" volume to the maximum and try to play a .wav file.

Still no dice? Please come again. :)

Hth,
Thomas

The only difference I can see now is that I do not have
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_ONYX is not set
# CONFIG_SND_AOA_TAS is not set
set in my kernel config. Perhaps that does the trick. On the other hand, you may want to try to compile the whole sound subsystem as modules and try again. Who knows what ALSA does when it is compiled directly into the kernel. - Should not make any difference but you never know.

Cheers,

On my mini alsamixer doesn't show PCM until I've played a sound file. The amixer output looks like above before playing a sound file and afterwards also shows the PCM mixer control:
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Code:
  Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 255
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 205 [80%] [-10.00dB]
  Front Right: Playback 205 [80%] [-10.00dB]
