I have a Powermac 7200 that I am trying to install 2008.0 on with no luck. It has 64MB of RAM and currently has System 7.6.1 installed. I got BootX 1.2.2 installed OK, copied the kernel and miniroot over from the CD (they were actually ppc32 and ppc32.igz, not apple and apple.igz as the install guide said) and setup BootX. If I then boot, I get as far as

Code:

...
MMU:enter
MMU:hardware init
hash:enter
hash:find piece

and then it hangs. I waited a long time, probably 10 minutes, before giving up on it. I then tried ungzipping the miniroot and it only gets as far as

Code:

...
Preparing boot params...
Preparing BAT...

before hanging. If I boot without specifying a miniroot, the kernel loads just fine and will get as far as panic-ing because it doesn't have a real root. Oddly, and probably unrelated, the first character of every line in the boot messages is missing.

This looks like a memory-related problem but I'm not sure what to do about it. Anyone have any ideas?

I think with the size of the initrd and the kernel, etc., you need 128Mb of ram. I haven't tried booting from 2008.0 on my 8500 yet, but when I get back from Thanksgiving break, I'll give it a try. In the mean time, any other distro that boots can be used to install Gentoo so long as they provide partitioning tools, fs creation tools and wget. Older Gentoo releases may work as well, but may have some issues upgrading to the newest releases.

I found a little more RAM and now I'm at 80MB, but unfortunately there's no change in the boot process. At your suggestion I got my hands on some YDL 3 isos and hopefully I can use those to boot. It'd be cool if you could check your 8500 to make sure that I will be able to boot Gentoo eventually!
