PostPosted: Wed Nov 19, 2008 2:32 am    Post subject: vmware-server 1.0.8 and kernel 2.6.27 [solved] Reply with quote

I have an IBM x235 server that I run gentoo on and due to a number of hardware issues I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.25 to 2.6.27
After performing this upgrade and get x11 working with some beta NVidia drivers I still have one major problem; for the life of me I can't get vmware-server 1.0.8 to install even after a week of scrounging the internet. The current ebuild as well as manually installing the modules fail to compile. I tried the vmware-specific-specific 5.5.x and kernel 2.6.27 patch and the modules compile but it refuses to load the modules.

Due to the number of problems 2.6.27 has fixed downgrading isn't really an option. (example: PCI cards or one of the CPUs kept getting flagged as failed but were perfectly fine)

Before running VMware for the first time after update, you need to configure it
for your running kernel by invoking the following command:
"/opt/vmware/server/bin/vmware-config.pl". Do you want this script to invoke the
command for you now? [yes]

Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.

None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your
running kernel.  Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for
your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes]

Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running
kernel? [/usr/src/linux-2.6.27-gentoo-r3/include]

There is probably a slight difference in the kernel configuration between the
set of C header files you specified and your running kernel.  You may want to
rebuild a kernel based on that directory, or specify another directory.

For more information on how to troubleshoot module-related problems, please
visit our Web site at "http://www.vmware.com/download/modules/modules.html" and

vmware breaks after every new kernel. Wait a while and there will eventually be a working version/patch for 2.6.27. Check the gentoo bugzilla, you can usually find a sneak preview of any progress there. It is annoying.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=227303

You can also check the vmware overlay in layman for more frequent updates.

You can try the updated modules ebuild referenced from this post. It's distilled from the attachments and comments in the bug cited above. Be advised the bug comments report mixed results for these patches on .27 kernels. If it doesn't work for you, keep watching the bug or move to VMware Server 2 (more info in the thread I linked).
