Can anyone think of why Fail2Ban won't start after the rather large Gnome update? There were a lot of updates there and I have no idea if and which ones would have "broken" fail2ban. I'm glad I switched my ssh to a non-standard port or else I would be blasted by brute force attacks.

I guess I'll check my kernel to make sure iptables support is still there. Otherwise, I don't have a clue.

Well, that was easy. I just had to check the fail2ban website and try a few commands from there.

Code:
fail2ban-client start
2008-11-19 10:22:58,485 fail2ban.server : INFO   Starting Fail2ban v0.8.3
2008-11-19 10:22:58,487 fail2ban.server : INFO   Starting in daemon mode

ERROR  Could not start server. Maybe an old socket file is still present. Try to remove /var/run/fail2ban/fail2ban.sock. If you used fail2ban-client to start the server, adding the -x option will do it

So of course I tried with the -x option.

Code:
fail2ban-client -x start
2008-11-19 10:23:57,654 fail2ban.server : INFO   Starting Fail2ban v0.8.3
2008-11-19 10:23:57,655 fail2ban.server : INFO   Starting in daemon mode

It started. Problem solved. I guess I should restart the system at some point to make sure it persists. This happened after a power outage, so perhaps there are a few other things that are corrupted or orphaned.
