Hi,

today I installed e17 via enlightenment-overlay. At least it compiled and started without any errors. There's only one thing I didn't like:

It's not slotted.

Thus it removed my e16.8. And that's not really what I wanted, because I created an e16-theme which I would have the port to e17 first. So, I would prefer to play some time with e17 before change finally. My simple plan is to insert a SLOT-variable into the 2 enlightenment-ebuilds. Do I have to respect something else?

But is it definitely coming or is it "coming", like it's been for the last <insert_large_integer_here> years?

I guess it's some kine of "definitely". I'd installed the enlightenment-overlay. But for a long time it wasn't possible to install e17. Now there was an update of that overlay, and they marked e17 as unstable but not masked. The update was without slots. So my e16.8 was removed. I had to insert slots into the ebuilds and reemerge e16.8.

But after some playing with e17 I'm quite a kind of disappointed. It seems slower than e16 and for my usage I can't find any improvements. Furthermore I guess it's a lot of work to rewrite my e16-theme to e17. The only nice gadget would be the cube.

lol! There has never ever been a real release of Enlightenment. Only DRs (Developer Release) and the snapshot "releases" for DR 0.17

Which cube?

And that's quite a shame because Enlightenment rocks but, boy, e16 is so damn old and e17... well, I guess that when it makes it to the repositories of the mainstream distros it will be already old too.

It's simply the E nature. Enlightenment, as someone already pointed out, ever ever did any official release. E16 has become old without being released. And E17 is already old by today standards, where all the newer desktops use compositing and stuff like that (and not 2d effects which is all that e1[67] can do). E17 is coming, and it will continue "coming" without ever reaching any final fate, just like E16.

Not that it's bad. It's a nice alternative and some people seem to be happy with it. But it's just the way that E always worked and I don't see that changing.

musv, you should speak to the maintainers of whatever overlay you are using, since this is unofficial stuff. You have a better chance to get some explanation/support from them. I don't know why it hasn't been slotted in first place. It's the natural way to go because e16 and e17 isn't really related. Not at desktop or concept level, and much less at low level. E16 is a simple wm that uses imlib as its foundation while E17 has a bigger architecture based on evas and some other components that have been designed from the ground specifically for E17. So there's really no conflict in having both, plug 17 is not the "continuation" of 16 at all.
