I'm having issues getting Plymouth to work on my netbook. I got it installed and running just fine on my desktop using the noeveu+kms setup, but I can't get it to do the same on my netbook that's running an intel gma graphics chipset. I did all the same procedures and set things almost completely the same baring the kernel modeset variable which isn't needed as I have i915 built in with kms.

What do I need to post for any idea what's not working?

I've read that for Intel GMA graphic cards you have to add the following line to /etc/init.d/splash:
Code:
FRAMEBUFFER=y

And then rebuild the Initramfs.

Did you ever get uvesafb up and running? Does the monitor switch off and get no signal or only black screen?

Can't say I ever tried to get uvesafb running. It's always worked just fine with the i915 driver all over. A flicker as it takes the important stuff.

And I don't have an /etc/init.d/splash file. Do I have to create it?

Seems like /etc/init.d/fbcondecor is used now, but if you never used any framebuffer like (u)vesafb it won't be there too..

I guess you've set VIDEO_CARDS="intel" - did you try the live ebuild? 0.8.3 is pretty old. But it's maybe a KMS related problem - did you try http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Kernel_Mode_Setting#Troubleshooting ?

Haven't tried to live ebuild yet. It worked just fine on the desktop but I'm not surprised there's issues on the netbook. I did manage to get the system splashing with fbsplash however.

Hi,
I followed the fine manual about gentoo and plymouth. It does not work for me.
I suspect that perhaps I shoud do something with the -a switch while generating an iniramfs with
dracut -H -a ???
Should it be a name of a module from /lib/modules/<kernel> ?

The screen right after the initrams gets initialized shows repetitive message:
"Adress family not supported by protocol" and something about udevadm as if that program was responsable
for the text.

Here is what dracut does on my machine:
Code:
dracut -H -f -M -k /lib/modules/2.6.38-gentoo-r1/kernel/
dash
caps
i18n
plymouth
kernel-modules
F: No modules.builtin.bin and modules.builtin found!

I: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 6194553 08-20 22:32 /boot/initramfs-2.6.38-gentoo-r1.img

I need hints as to how to tackle the problem.

tnx in advance
Agryppa

Agryppa,
Try with add_drivers+="unix" in /etc/dracut.conf.

Does plymouth have a verbose mode?
