BTW, there's an other ebuild here: https://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/java/export/7270/java-experimental/dev-java/sun-jdk/sun-jdk-1.6.0.12_beta2.ebuild, see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-718577-highlight-.html.

Woohoooo! this one works for me :D
If anyone runs into problems with eselect like me, make sure you run the command like so:
Code:
eselect java-nsplugin set 64bit sun-jdk-1.6

The 64-bit error thing through me off, being in the tired stupor that I'm currently in :P

On the "java test" website that sun has:

"You are using a newer version of JRE than the current version available on java.com"

heheheheh :P

Seems a silly decision, it's not like you can accidentally slip and install a load of dodgy e-builds, it's a conscious decision. I just want an e-build which just brings down a binary and installs it, doesn't seem that much can go wrong that would be gentoo's fault. The new java version may be dodgy, but that wouldn't be gentoo's fault, and I'd get the choice.

This just seems to be restricting choice which is against what gentoo's supposed to be about.

I've been waiting for ages for the new java version so I can play go online, bah. Unecessary waiting.

I know I can install it manually, it's just there's an ebuild available, and I'd rather do it neatly.

Can't get this work for me. Already installed sun-jdk-1.6.0.12_beta2 ebuild and typed:

Code:
eselect java-nsplugin set 64bit sun-jdk-1.6

with

Code:
eselect java-nsplugin list

i get

Code:
Available 32-bit Java browser plugins
  [1]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6
  [2]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6-plugin2  current
Available 64-bit Java browser plugins
  [1]   icedtea6-bin
  [2]   sun-jdk-1.6  current

but the java plugin doesn't work in firefox neither in konqueror.

I tried this websites:

http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1
http://java.sun.com/applets/jdk/1.4/index.html

with no luck.

P.S: Couldn't make the icedtea-bin plugin work also.

Do you use firefox 3? I think I've read somewhere that the plugin only works in firefox 3 because it's a type 2 (?) plugin.

This applies to icedtea-bin also?

Epsilon72, where am I supposed to put that ebuild? I've downloaded the bin file and tried to ebuild digest it.

Also, can somebody on the java team respond to the criticisms earlier about the decision to make life difficult for people by not including java-experimental in layman.

Here's a good reading about how to put ebuilds in a local overlay: http://www.gentoo-wiki.info/HOWTO_Installing_3rd_Party_Ebuilds. Make sure you not only fetch the ebuild but also the files in the "files" subdirectory...

Don't wonder if nobody responds as these guys may have other things to do than reading every thread in the forums :wink:

Amazing,
Java devs get it work after 6 years.

see:
Java Bug ID Support 64-bit Java Plug-in and Java webstart on Windows/Linux on AMD64
submit date 14-JAN-2003
fixed with 6u12(b01) XX-JAN-2009

Java was always slow than years, *hilarious*

[Solved, kind of... I installed Icedtea6-bin from portage]

I tried to install from an ebuild (ebuild linked in the first post - made by geki I suppose). I managed to digest the ebuild but when compiling I got an error message:

Code:

HI,
I've installed the ebuild above, digested it and downloaded the bin file but when I come to emerge it I get the following error;
Quote:

n/unpack200

* ERROR: dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.12_beta2 failed.
* Call stack:
* ebuild.sh, line 49: Called src_install
* environment, line 2774: Called set_java_env
* environment, line 2723: Called die
* The specific snippet of code:
* die "Unable to find the env file: ${source_env_file}";
* The die message:
* Unable to find the env file: /usr/local/portage/dev-java/sun-jdk/files/sun-jdk-1.6.env
*
* If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
* A complete build log is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.12_beta2/temp/build.log'.
* The ebuild environment file is located at '/var/tmp/portage/dev-java/sun-jdk-1.6.0.12_beta2/temp/environment'.
* This ebuild is from an overlay: '/usr/local/portage/'
*

Any suggestions gratefully received.
Cheers!

Make "files" directory(in ebuild directory), downolad this file maunaly and place there.

I had the same problem as BrummieJim, and Acei's suggestion fixed it.

Now it installed, and the Sun Java test says that it works. The dancing thing blinks a lot, though, disappearing and reappearing, and some sites still don't work, or even worse, crash.

For me icedtea did emerge without a problem. It's in the java-overlay which can be managed with layman.
1) emerge layman (if not already merged)
2) add java-overlay
3) emerge icedtea6
4) eselect icedtea as java-nsplugin
5) works (hopefully), if not have a look at the icedtea-thread in the forum

I've got a circular dependencies error if I try to install icedtea6
Code:

 * Error: circular dependencies:

('ebuild', '/', 'dev-java/icedtea6-1.3.1-r2', 'merge') depends on
  ('ebuild', '/', 'dev-java/icedtea6-1.3.1-r2', 'merge') (hard)

 * Note that circular dependencies can often be avoided by temporarily
 * disabling USE flags that trigger optional dependencies.

I'm going to test the icedtea6-bin plugin.
Updated: icedtea6-bin nsplugin from ~amd64 works fine in my laptop.

No, maybe this can help: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-software-2/gxine-usrbinld-cannot-find-lmozjs-389653/.
Not about Icedtea but same error.

thanks, this seems to be the cause,

could you please do a check and post where your libmozjs.so is located ?

I 've set the "xulrunner" use flag (if this matters).
