I downloaded frostwire because the one in portage is from about 1997 but i'm unsure how to install it because it's all in java.

Any suggestions?

Looks like you just need to unpack the tarball and run that runFrostwire.sh script. I'd just slap the extracted tarball contents in like /opt/frostwire and symlink /usr/bin/frostwire to /opt/frostwire/runFrostwire.sh

running it from /opt gives a java error

gtk gnutella is awful and brings up a tenth of the results that lime/frostwire does

Soulseek (nicotine for linux) is the best P2P program I've used. The network is relatively close-knit, and it's not uncommon to have a conversation with the peer you are downloading from. Not to mention that it's album-oriented, so you're not stuck downloading each song from the album individually.

After seeing this I have been playing around trying to get the ebuild updated. Currently have one issue with building it so hopefully within the next couple of days I will be able to give you something that at least runs (note it will not meet the high standards of the Gentoo Java Team :) )

Sadly they don't provide source releases so you will have to create your own tar.bz2. I will include instructions at the time.

I have it working now so if i can help then just shout.

A suggestion might be to add this to the ebuild:
Code:
{
   echo
   ewarn "If you use a DE you should be fine but those with window managers "
   ewarn "like Fluxbox or Window Maker should add the command "
   ewarn "/opt/frostwire/runfrostwire.sh to their menu"
}
