It has been a while since I have last tested mpd. Can mpd by now play music without building an index of my audio files first? Does mpd have a file browser (like moc)? I like moc very much, but it seems that moc's development has cooled down a bit, leaving it broken in some places.

MPD does need to build an index of your collection first, but it does that pretty fast (nothing like Amarok, which takes an eternity). Depending on the client you use, there is also a file browser.

cmus has an indexed and searchable library while still providing easy access to a file browser that you can use to build a playlist on the fly without adding the files to your library. I like it very much.

If anyone ever gets these working in gentoo, please put in a post as to how. It wouldn't matter what player of the ones available it required. The one I had problems with was the windows media external video.

thanks

Yeah, from what I read micro sneaky really did pull a fast one there by making it so that no other o/s could easily/legally provide a player for that format, and then at the same time convince people to use it so other software would appear as lacking to end users. Dirty tricks seems to be their specialty.

Yet another valid reason to hate them with a passion.

I removed xmms when portage gave up on it, but, today audacious kept crashing so I just grabbed the source off xmms.org (stellar site btw) compiled it with no problems and its running fine. has all my old settings and playlist from a year ago :) (remember to run ldconfig after make install)
