Is Freebob going to make it into Portage in the near future?

Humour in subject lines. Great for releasing steam. :-P

Ok. Trying to get freebob and firewire into jack-audio-connection-kit-0.116.1. I downloaded http://freebob.sourceforge.net/index.php/Main_Page and did a straight-up compile. I can see the libs in /usr/local/lib. I even made symlinks in /usr/lib. But jack-audio-whereisit-kit still says FALSE to compiling with freebob and firewire.

What do I need to do?

Note to self: I'm surely gonna kick myself when someone points out something REALLY obvious. :-P

That's interesting. What's also interesting is that upon sticking it into my local portage tree myself, it says it's masked by the x86 keyword. Put it in my package.keywords and it emerges.

I just posted this: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-718190-highlight-.html

And now I'm thinking perhaps jack-audio-connection-kit should have a "freebob" use flag so that it will pick up freebob/firewire drivers if that flag is enabled.

did you apply the diff to the ebuild from the bug that i posted in your other thread?

I actually just found that using the ebuild and then re-emerging jack-audio-connection-kit lets jack pick it up during configure. Yes!

So if that's done, should I still apply the diff? (and how, do I, btw)?

if it works without, i'm going to say no.

but to patch ebuilds you would do something like this:

Quote:

make a local overlay.
copy jack-audio-connection-kit over to it.
wget/etc the patch and copy it to the same dir as the overlay'd ebuild.
patch -p0 < the.patch.file

haven't done it in a while, so i might be missing a step.

This should really go in U.S.

Merged and moved from Multimedia to Unsupported Software.

Thanks, bunder! :D

Btw, jackd won't start with realtime. How much do you know about starting jack? I get:

PostPosted: Mon Dec 15, 2008 9:39 pm    Post subject: The Gentoo Freebob Thread Reply with quote

I hope I'm not duplicating this effort - I searched and didn't find a thread on these forums dealing with Freebob. It seems like, from those who've gotten it to work, an answer to certain prayers. For the rest of us, those prayers continue to float along where the sun don't shine.

Let's try to change that. I have ONE remaining Windoze workstation in my household, and that's only because my MOTU MIDI patch bay, Mackie Onyx/Firewire mixers and Cakewalk Sonar need it. Sonar I can find suitable subtitutes for in Linux - boy, can I. But until I can use those mixers with their Firewire cards, I'm stuck with Windoze.

I SO want to chuck Windoze.

I'm going to post the things I try, whether it works or not, in the hopes it gives me a single location to keep track of what does and does not work. I hope to find a solution. I hope others will contribute. And I hope this thread will be useful to others.

I also hope to not have to worry about money someday, to have a nice house in the country with no neighbors closer than an acre away, world peace, universal human intelligence, yadda, etc., but those are beyond the scope of this thread.

Here's a thread that inspired this thread. https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-718166-highlight-.html. I'm not cross-posting or creating duplicates. In the other thread I only wanted to know whether there were plans to introduce Freebob into portage.

Thus far, I have done this:

  • From http://freebob.sourceforge.net/index.php/Main_Page you can click on "Building and Installing" and look for a link to the tarball on the Sourceforge page that appears. I didn't have any trouble compiling this, but when I went to compile jack-audio-connection-kit, it didn't see the freebob drivers. I put symlinks from the files in /usr/local
/lib to /usr/lib, but no go.
  • Then I found an ebuild for Freebob (courtesy of bunder): libfreebob (https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206001). Hats off to Trinine for creating this ebuild. I created an overlay and this compiled fine. jack-audio-connection-kit then compiles and picks it up.
  • Qjackctl would not let me start jackd; however, using a command line as root allowed it to start. HOWEVER, this revealed other problems, and this is where I'm now stuck.

The output of

Code:

/usr/bin/jackd -v -R -P70 -p128 -dfreebob -r48000 -p1024 -n3 -D

is

Code:

getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_dummy.so
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_freebob.so
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_net.so
getting driver descriptor from /usr/lib/jack/jack_alsa.so

To which I say "whaddaya mean, cannot load driver freebob?".

Note: when I compiled jack-audio-connection-kit, the ./configure portion distinguished between the "old" freebob and "new" ffado. I haven't found any "new" ffado sources - just the freebob one I mentioned above. I don't know if that would make a difference.

A couple of links I have found so far:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=522738&page=3
http://parumi.wordpress.com/category/freebob/ (--disable-samplerate didn't help, although if you need to, you can just edit the ebuild to include that flag)

Coming soon... Mo' Fun Wit Freebob!

Not owning a firewire audio device myself I cannot really help with this. But if you want to try ffado, there is an ebuild in pro-audio overlay.

Thanks for the link, gimpel.

Did I overlook it? I see freebob in the ebuild list, but nothing called "ffado".

Until now there was only a live scm -9999 version, but I just committed libffado-2.0_rc1.ebuild - just sync the overlay.

Feel free to test! :) You'll need to unmask sys-libs/libraw1394-1.3.0* from portage, or the 2.0.0 from proaudio.
And of course make sure your device is listed as supported or, well, at least as unknown: http://www.ffado.org/?q=devicesupport/list

Yeah, I'm using Onyx mixers with Firewire - those are listed.

Will check it out in a bit. Thanks again!

I picked up the pro-audio overlay and emerged libffado, then re-emerged jack-audio-connection-kit. But I don't know which driver to use when I start jackd. If I use dfreebob, jackd says it's unknown. Ditto dfirewire. I re-emerged qjackctl, but that didn't changed anything.

What'd I miss?

PostPosted: Wed Dec 17, 2008 1:10 am    Post subject: rt-sources 2.6.26.6-rt11 fails to make Reply with quote

By the way, I just tried to compile rt-sources. I copied my config over from my working kernel, went into menuconfig, looked around, was satisfied all was well, and got this on make:

Code:

  CHK     include/linux/version.h
  CHK     include/linux/utsrelease.h
  CC      arch/x86/kernel/asm-offsets.s
In file included from include/linux/notifier.h:14,
                 from include/linux/memory_hotplug.h:6,
                 from include/linux/mmzone.h:560,
                 from include/linux/gfp.h:4,
                 from include/linux/slab.h:12,
                 from include/linux/percpu.h:5,
                 from include/linux/rcupdate.h:39,
                 from include/linux/tracepoint.h:18,
                 from include/linux/module.h:19,
                 from include/linux/crypto.h:21,
                 from arch/x86/kernel/asm-offsets_32.c:7,
                 from arch/x86/kernel/asm-offsets.c:2:
include/linux/rwsem.h:150: error: redefinition of 'rwsem_is_locked'
include/asm/rwsem.h:261: error: previous definition of 'rwsem_is_locked' was here
include/linux/rwsem.h: In function 'rwsem_is_locked':
include/linux/rwsem.h:151: error: implicit declaration of function 'compat_rwsem_is_locked'
make[1]: *** [arch/x86/kernel/asm-offsets.s] Error 1
make: *** [prepare0] Error 2

Also, would someone be willing to post a little about what rt-sources is, or provide a link? I googled, but found only a long list of people posting to mailing lists about it. I didn't find a page somewhere that simply describes rt-sources.

Had the same or a similar problem trying to compile rt-sources 2.6.26.3-r3.

With 2.6.25.8-rt7:

I'm just gonna have to pass until I can figure out why these kernels are not compiling. More versions backwards and it's no good for my udev setup.

The problem with rt-sources should go in a different thread. Or, as rt-sources is nothing else but vanilla patched with the -rt patch, you should check the linux-rt-users mailing list. Make sure the problem hasn't been reported yet, and if it hasn't, report it there.
You can find info about -rt in general and links to their list on http://rt.wiki.kernel.org/

Your error with 2.6.25 could be caused by using CONFIG_SLUB=y. See if it works with with good old SLAB.
Be warned that 2.6.25-rt is almost unusable for MIDI work.

--------
As for ffado, the correct way to install it, is to emerge jack-audio-connection-kit with USE="ieee1394" (may it be a patched ebuild from b.g.o. or the one in pro-audio). I could only compile-test it, the jack driver ends up as /usr/lib/jack/jack_firewire.so

For libffado I had problems with USE="mixer" as it refuses to find some dbus/qt python module. Not sure if this is caused by the qt-4.5 snapshots I use, or if it's a problem in the build setup. Reports about success or confirmation of the problem would help.

It looks like jack-audio-connection-kit is already compiled correctly, as jack-firewire is in /usr/lib/jack. So I tried jackd --realtime -d firewire (or even jackd -d firewire) and got

Code:

no message buffer overruns
jackd 0.116.1
Copyright 2001-2005 Paul Davis and others.
jackd comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; see the file COPYING for details

JACK compiled with System V SHM support.
loading driver ..
libffado 1.999.40- built Dec 16 2008 17:12:21
firewire ERR: Error creating FFADO streaming device
cannot load driver module firewire
no message buffer overruns

I just don't know what I'm missing. :?

I'm running emerge -uDN lmms, for which I had to disable the mixer use flag (the update wanted to rebuild libffado). So there may indeed be issues with that. With the mixer flag enabled, there were blocks related to qt stuff.

Is this list active? I could subcribe, but when I checked the mail archives, the newest archived mail is dated from February. I don't know if I'm supposed to get another email telling me where to send messages to the list, but I haven't gotten one yet and I don't see on the wiki where to send messages once you're subscribed.

Your kernel does have firewire support enabled?
And also take a look at bzless /usr/share/doc/libffado-2.0_rc1/README.bz2 on how to start jackd to get meaningfull output.

Not sure what lmms has to do with it :)

The ffado mixer app needs Qt4. The ebuild uses split deps, like all other ebuilds, e.g. lmms has the same deps regarding Qt.
But without the error mesage, help is impossible.

http://marc.info/?l=linux-rt-users looks active. The list is hosted at vger.kernel.org: http://vger.kernel.org/vger-lists.html#linux-rt-users

I do have firewire support enabled in kernel. I just read the README word by word, but I'm still getting the same "firewire not found" error.

lmms doesn't have anything to do with it. :P It just pulled in libffado, for which I disabled the mixer use flag.

Is there a command similar to lspci and lsusb that scans firewire ports for attached devices? I'd like a way to scan my firewire bus and make sure I can actually see the mixer attached. The firewire card shows up in lspci but doesn't tell me what's plugged into it.

Here's my kernel config, just in case I missed something:
