Are you able to see the sound output device in Sound System Configuration?

I came home and did an emerge --sync and layman -S and emerged (updated) skype and subversion (am I still using that for anything?), looked at my systemsettings -just changed the sound devices from advanced view to default, and fired up amarok just to see if anything was different. It works now - after several weeks of it not working. I have no idea why.

Here's what works for me:
Same use flags for amarok as I've shown on page 8.
Code:
[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/xine-lib-1.1.16  USE="X a52 alsa dts dvd flac ipv6 jack mad mmap mng modplug musepack nls opengl oss samba sdl theora truetype v4l vcd vorbis win32codecs xcb xinerama xv xvmc -aac -aalib (-altivec) -arts -debug -directfb -dxr3 -esd -fbcon -gnome -gtk -imagemagick -libcaca -pulseaudio (-real)-speex -vidix (-vis) -wavpack" 0 kB [0]
[ebuild   R   ] kde-base/phonon-kde-4.1.96  USE="kdeprefix -debug" 0 kB [1]
[ebuild   R   ] media-sound/phonon-4.2.96  USE="xcb xine -debug -gstreamer" 0 kB [1]

So I can't help otherwise - it just started working. No reboot or anything. Good luck sgao!

Oh, and if I open up systemsettings and go to multimedia, the backend is still an empty window.

cheers, JD

Now that kde-metas are replace with sets, it seems its impossimble to use autounmask to unmask all the packages easily. Any ideas to this? I'd hate to do it manually one package at a time.

Hi,
there is something wrong with my box - kde-4.1.96. See the image.
http://marian.kyralovi.cz/img/clock.png

Upper is digital clock applet after start to default configuration (removed whole .kde4 directory).
There is missing date in panel and some strange text "00:00," in tooltip. In the default settings, date is DISABLED and time zone ENABLED!

Image below is taken after the I enabled "Show date" option and disabled "Show time zone". Date is shown, but tooltip is wrong and time is not changing. More worse, any clock plasmoid I add, looks similar - time is not changed anymore :-(

I tryied to reemerge plasma-workspace, libplasmaclock, kdelibs, all plasma packages and this night I re-emerged all kde4 packages. Still the same :-(
I have also second box, the same setting - no problem.

Any idea? My next step would be probably uninstall of kde4 and new installation :-(

Note: I'm using a little bit different format of date - simple patch. But I tested it also without my change - the same issue.

EDIT: I've found a workaround. I had to add English into languages in systemsetting, then play a little with time formats, switch back to Czech and finally it works.

@acei
Theme was probably updated and digest is invalid now. You can wait till is fixed, or copy the ebuild to your local overlay and refresh digest yourself.

I want to install kde 4.2 with paludis. I added the overlay with playman -a kde-testing.
How do I install the kde 4.2 set now?
In /var/paludis/repositories/kde-testing/Documentation/sets/paludis/ are sets but how do I add them to paludis now?

those sets are long out of date.

I've been keeping an updated set for myself. just download them from here and untar them to your paludis sets directory

Hmm why wouldn't you use the paludis overlay? I thought it was *that* much better. ;)

I whipped up a little script to convert portage sets to paludis...

WARNING: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. This code probably sucks, I've only tested it with the kde sets so make sure you copy them in their own isolated directory. Once completed then copy the sets over to your /etc/paludis/sets

Also, I just added -maxdepth 1 to the find command, just in case somebody decides to be careless. Take that off if it doesn't work.

EDIT: Improvements are welcomed and encouraged. :wink:

Code:
#!/bin/bash

suffix=".conf"
sedcmd="sed -i -r"

sed_re="s/^[A-Za-z0-9]+-[A-Za-z0-9]+\//?: \0/g; s/^@(.+-)([0-9])\.([0-9])(\.([0-9]))?$/* \1\2\3\5/g"
file_re="^\./(.+-)([0-9]+)\.([0-9]+)(\.([0-9]+))?$"

function errcheck() {
   ret=$1
   if [ "$ret" != "0" ]; then
      exit $ret
   fi
}

findout=(`find . -maxdepth 1 -type f -not -name "*${suffix}"`)
errcheck $?

echo -n "Looking for files that do not end in '${suffix}': "
if [[ $findout ]]; then
   echo "${#findout[@]} found"
   echo "Processing files..."
   for f in ${findout[@]}
   do
      ${sedcmd} "${sed_re}" "${f}"
      errcheck $?
      if [[ $f =~ $file_re ]]; then
         newfile="${BASH_REMATCH[1]}${BASH_REMATCH[2]}${BASH_REMATCH[3]}${BASH_REMATCH[5]}${suffix}"
         mv "${f}" "${newfile}"
         errcheck $?
      else
         mv "${f}" "${f}${suffix}"
         errcheck $?
      fi
   done

   echo "Done."
   exit 0
else
   echo "none found."
   exit 0
fi

What is the status on USE 'kdeprefix'? Is it recommended to set this flag or is it just a nice thing to have when wanting SLOTted versions of kde? The reason I'm asking, is that the bespin ebuild in kde-crazy is asking for +prefix to be set. While I understand the reason for that (live ebuild can be built with any particular version of kde, and so different binaries for different versions might be required, etc.) - is the use of +kdeprefix encouraged, and if so, why isn't it the default behaviour? :roll:

ANNOUNCEMENT posted on gentoo-desktop ml

Hello

this weekend there have been some significant changes to the KDE Overlays. We have merged kde-crazy and kde-testing overlays to kde-testing, so the users of the live KDE ebuilds must remove kde-crazy and add kde-testing. This move has been decided in the last Gentoo KDE Team's meeting, because of difficulties to maintainance.
Also the Gentoo QT Team has moved their testing ebuilds (QT 4.5 beta and QT live ebuilds) to another overlay, which is called qting-edge. This one contains the QT beta ebuilds, QT live ebuilds (from KDE svn and from NOKIA git) and some QT-only applications (live and non-live).
For more information and questions, you can find us on IRC (Freenode #gentoo-kde), on gentoo-desktop mailing list and in our forums thread about kde overlays.

I get this when trying to emerge @kde-live from the testing overlay.

Code:
!!! All ebuilds that could satisfy "kde-base/khangman:live" have been masked.
!!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
- kde-base/khangman-9999 (masked by: package.mask, missing keyword)

Adding khangman to package.keywords didnt fix it.

There only seems to be 1 package.unmask file

/usr/portage/local/layman/kde-testing/Documentation/package.unmask/kde4

Are the live ones missing?

you should add it to /etc/portage/package.unmask (it may be directory, than create file with random name inside and place needed stuff their). Files from Documentation/package.* are incomplete

i have created a Documentation/package.unmask/kde-live folder which contains only one file now. I'm going to fix it further. You can symlink this kde-live folder in your /etc/portage/package.unmask/ in order to keep up-to-date with the changes that we maintainers are going to do

Thanks tampakrap - Ill wait a few days before trying a full update again and report any problems. The keywords.unmask file has fixed most of it by the look of it.

I have resync the kde-testing overlay and deleted the kde-crazy overlay. I wanted to ask why when I do a emerge -uDNav world, the emerge try to compile kdelibs-9999 and it says it's masked. I don't have the @kde-live installed. I have @kde-4.2....

Thanks for all

Try it with --tree, then you will see which package wants to emerge kdelibs-9999.
I guess it is a special plasmoid.
