Answering myself: workaround.

Well, I experienced myself a lot of strange behaviours with lastest nvidia-driver. People here seems to be using 180.29 version of these drivers and it works without major problems.

Looks like it works well with antialiasing set as suggested on that bug report, so I think I won't downgrade, even if fonts look less beautiful than before :(

Its not only about fonts. Most of people got random crashes too.
Well, that's your decision. I don't see such huge difference between 180.29 and the lastest driver, I can live without it - and with antialias :P

Oh, no I don't get any random crashes luckly. And fonts are antialiased, they're just not antialiased the way I'd like.

Why do I see all kde4 apps like this?

I think it is because of your anti-aliasing settings. You need to open system settings and then go to Appearance -> fonts -> use anti-aliasing - disable it to start. If you cannot read anything then use the search functions in the kmenu and system settings to help you.

I have it set to RGB, I think I remember having your problem when I set it to one of the vertical ones.

@reavertm,
I'm suddenly having a kode problem again, on another box. I have removed kode from this box, checked world file and /var/db/pkg, and synced the overlay, but still get this:
Code:
kdesvn wrc # emerge -pv1 @kdepim-live

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=kde-base/kode-9999:live[kdeprefix]".
(dependency required by "kde-base/mimelib-9999" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@kdepim-live" [argument])

kdesvn wrc #
In the kdepim-live set, kode is commented out, so I'm wondering what my problem is. This didn't happen on my ~amd64 box- just removing kode and syncing the overlay fixed me up, like you mentioned.

EDIT: Also just found this: /var/cache/edb/dep/usr/local/portage/layman/kde-testing/kde-base/kode-9999
I removed it too, re-synced overlay again but still get the same problem. :?

The actual error should be way up in the output, could be a missing header.

Any idea?

kde-wallpapers, kde-menu-icons etc got renamed to kdebase-wallpapers/-menu-icons

So you first have to uninstall the old blocking packages: emerge -C kde-menu:4.3 kde-menu-icons:4.3 kde-wallpapers:4.3

Another k3b problem...

Code:
emerge: there are no ebuilds to satisfy ">=media-libs/taglib-1.5.0".
(dependency required by "app-cdr/k3b-9999" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "k3b" [argument])

Code:
# eix -e taglib
[I] media-libs/taglib
     Available versions:  1.5 {debug test}
     Installed versions:  1.5(18:23:45 09/10/08)(-debug -test)
     Homepage:            http://developer.kde.org/~wheeler/taglib.html
Description:         A library for reading and editing audio meta data

Changing the k3b ebuild to 1.5 fixed it.

The actual error should be way up in the output, could be a missing header.

Here is the whole output, I can't find anything... could you help me please?

Since I haven't been able to find any CD/DVD burning application that is not k3b and is compatible with kde-4.2 I have come to the conclusion that k3b-live is my best bet. So, I went ahead and unmasked the live version only to discover that k3b-9999 requires kdelibs-4.2 (and greater) to be built with the kdeprefix flag. Now, I have not used this flag before and all I know about it that it can be used to slot kde versions (4.1 and 4.2 in different slots). Now, I do not intend to slot any kde versions, so if I decide to go ahead and install 4.2.66 or anything similar I would want that to replace my existing 4.2 installation.
Therefore, I would like to know how can I use this kdeprefix flag and still disable slotting. All I want is k3b, I would actually settle for a replacement as well. All I basically need is an app for disc burning (with gui). For command line, I already have burn-cd.

I think you should try to build kde-base/kdebase-kioslaves with samba use flag.

Where is kode? :)

Code:

helium ~ # emerge -uDvaN world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

(dependency required by "kde-base/kmail-4.2.66" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "@world" [argument])

helium ~ #

Code:

helium ~ # eix -e kode
[I] kde-base/kode
     Available versions:
        (3.5)   3.5.9 (~)3.5.10
        (4.2)   (~)4.2.1

     Installed versions:  4.2.1(4.2)(11:42:38 2009.03.16)(-debug -kdeprefix)

Code:

Already up-to-date.

On kde-live, kwin 9999 fails- Complete error here: http://pastebin.com/m797a2d70

Basically, it's lots of "enumeral and non-enumeral type in conditional expression warnings" before this :
Code:

I am using qt-4.5.0 from portage- could that be a problem? What is the currently recommended qt for kde-live with the kde-testing overlay? On Arch, I'm using markc's precompiled kde-svn packages, and he is currently using qt-copy for his builds.

EDIT: After completing the rebuild (except kwin), I can reboot into kde OK, but have no icons in the kickoff menus or panel/desktop, apparently because I can't figure out how to recompile kwin yet. :? Probably other stuff messed up too.

That bug looks like developer error, there was something committed recently to do with screen edges, I would wait it out.

AFAIK Qt 4.5 is required for kde-live.

Yeah- I'll try again when I see a new commit on websvn/trunk. I would think my portage qt-4.5.0 is fine for kde-live.
