This leads me to suspect that a regression of some sort might have been introduced in .28 and that it's not zen-sources being at fault here. I've now had enough experimenting with it, will have to wait until .29 gets to -rc5 at least before trying to upgrade. If anyone wants the config files for the various versions that I tested, I would be more than happy to provide them. :)

you should use 'git bisect' to track down the commit that broke your machine and then post on LKML (instead of reverting to .27 and hoping that someone will magically fix this issue)

DIY, huh? Maybe I will, if I'm not programming next weekend perhaps...

Actually that raises a question - there are quite a few different commits in between .27 and .28, should I start testing the .28-rc1 (etc.) versions first and then move on to more stable releases?

start from the latest .27 that works, which might be a 2.6.27.Y kernel, which should have more in common with .28

Yes i want to watch that thread :)

Because I can't even use composite with 2.6.29-rc2 and nvidia, 3d rendering is not pretty.

I'm not one to update chronicly so when I occasionally peer into the can of worms of the kernel things always change on me.......

looking at the zen-sources site it appears zenmm got the boot and I no longer seen zenrt which I use.

This is just horrible with pat enabled. Am now using 2.6.29-rc2-zen1 with
pat disabled. Composite is working but i am seeing a performance hit.

RT is only useful for multimedia situations. And if you knew, there is only rt for 2.6.26. There is a 2.6.26-zenrt patch posted on the forums on zen-sources.org. I assume you know RT is only useful for your multimedia stuff ;) Because since most people don't do that stuff anyway, it doesn't matter.

Also, zenmm is bbs, and even if it was updated, what do you want it for? Broken system appealing to you :P, seriously, mm offers no gain over vanilla, if you desire a particular patch from mmotm then tell me about it.

disabling pat fixes it for me :\. I'm betting it's a bug in linus rather than nvidia. Hopefully fixed with the next pull from linus

posting here as a side-note, ati-drivers-8.561 doesn't work with SLQB, both SLAB and SLUB work fine.
and ati-drivers doesn't compile against 2.6.29 due to (i guess maybe) credential and acpi subsystem change.

問候 to Taiwan, Taipei :)

(I've personal ties to Taiwan ;) )

that's a pretty classic problem with the ati-drivers:

once I used ati it also wouldn't run with SLUB, the realtime kernel, etc.

it's also known for not being able to work with newer kernels,

you can say that it has a tradition with those problems

nvidia-drivers is much easier to get running in most of these cases

try filing a bug-report to ati's (un)official bug-tracker that support for 2.6.29 gets included in the next release otherwise it might be the one after that

I gave up on ATI binaries and switched to radeon/radeonhd. But that was because kernel tinkering is more important to me then fancy desktop effects. Zen moves forward to fast for ATI.

i tried the oss ati driver xf86-video-ati-6.10.0 + mesa 7.2 (my card is ATi Mobility Xpress 200M pci-id=5955), there is texture problem even with exa or XAANoOffscreenPixmap, thus compiz become unusable.
performance is acceptable (at least to me), tho.
there IS ALSO texture problem with propertiery ati-drivers but it only appears on cube rotate so not a big deal.

the switching between fglrx and radeon is a lot easier now, causes far less problems than before.
i'll switch to the oss driver when this BLOCKER bug gets fixed.

but it works with my 8500GT. nvidia-drivers-180.22 on Phenom 9550 (amd64).

Nvidia works fine here (8500GT too), booting with nopat though, 2.6.29-rc2-zen1 x86_64

Also got a patch for vmware-modules 1.0.0.23 working, thx to Ehud.

did I misconfigure something? pat works perfectly fine with a quadrofx 570m and the latest drivers[/list]...

BTW great work on the 2.6.29_rc2. work like a charm - from what I can tell. (I had to skip 2.6.28 due to some unexplainable issues (with ext4?). Was not your fault, I had the same on mainline and gentoo...)

poor nvidia users ;)

it's not that bad after all - I'd say AMD/ATI users are still the worst ;)

are you kidding me? radeon/radeonhd are great, they work with every new kernel, excellent 2d performance, excellent randr/multihead support, and 3d performance that increases every week, granted 3d improvements have been put on the back burner while r600 gets a decent working start but having a driver that always works with some features missing is much better than having a driver than doesnt always work because none of the extra features matter if it cant even set a display mode

+1
nice point! i'm considering ebay my nvidia cards and get an ATi one, since open source drivers are good enough to me.

btw, i am using nvidia-drivers-180.22 with zen-sources-2.6.29-rc2-zen1.
