I'm having no problems with mine. Did you use "make oldconfig" for your .config file? If a previous kernel works, it stands to reason that a new one would using the old config as a starting point.

Have you tried reemerging your X modules?

You didn't say what kind of machine this is. If it's a G5, perhaps this patch fixes the issue?

Yes, I used the old config as a starting point.

Would you mind sending me your kernel config, privately if need be, so I can see any differences?

You also have the open firmware framebuffer enabled. Does disabling this help? Can you provide a dmesg?

I tried disabling the open framebuffer and it didn't work.

Does it work with an older kernel? Which version of the nvidia xorg driver are you using?

I can use 2.6.27-gentoo-r7 and 2.1.12 of the xorg nvidia driver.

Some more questions! :) Is your user in the video group? Have you tried with UseFBDev set to false?

Okay, I'm out of ideas, sorry. Can you please try a git bisect and see which kernel patch broke X for you?

To do a git bisect:
1. Install git
Code:
# emerge git

2. Get a copy of the linux kernel tree with (Note this will take a while, it's hundreds of Mb of stuff):
Code:

$ git clone git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6

3. In the directory git downloaded, type (this will tell git what the last working version and broken version are):
Code:

$ git bisect good v2.6.27
$ git bisect bad v2.6.28

4. git will update the code in that directory to a point halfway between those two versions. Compile this kernel, test it and see which one works, then tell git if it was good:
Code:

### The kernel worked
$ git bisect good
### The kernel still didn't work
$ git bisect bad

5. Keep doing this until git tells you which patch caused the breakage to occur

Feel free to ask if you have any other questions.

Sounds like something I might try over the weekend.

Anyone else get 2.6.28 to work on a G4?

Yes. On my Mac Mini G4 the vanilla 2.6.28 kernel works very well. But the video hardware is an ATI RV280 though with no special drivers but the radeon one from Xorg 1.3.0.0-r6.

Yes, I have a few PowerMac G4 (AGP Graphics, and other variants) working with 2.6.28-gentoo-r5 and xorg 1.5. These all have radeon cards (Rage 128, RV280 [Radeon 9200], etc.). No problems using evdev and r128 or radeon drivers from xorg.
