There is a package called midisport, which is a USB firmware loader for the M-Audio/Midiman USB MIDI devices.

http://usb-midi-fw.sourceforge.net

Is there a Gentoo ebuild for this package?

If not, I wrote one... ;-)

I have a MIDISport UNO and have been playing around with this as well. I'd like to see your ebuild; did you post it on https://bugs.gentoo.org?

I remember reading somewhere they don't accept new projects unless you're at the foundation, but I guess that was out of date.

Should I file it under the catch-all category, Gentoo Linux?

Yeah, I'm no developer either, but I believe the basic procedure is to file it as an attachment under Gentoo Linux, with a subject like 'New Ebuild: <desc>' and Components --> Ebuild and Severity --> Enhancement. If one of the developers/maintainers chooses to pick it up, they'll edit it as necessary and put it in the tree. If not, it's still in Bugzilla for others to download and use in their local portage overlays. I find that 3 out of 4 times if I'm looking for an application that's not in portage I can usually find someone who has already done the ebuild for me in Bugzilla. The ease of creating ebuilds in the local overlay is one of the great features of Gentoo IMO.

BTW, after playing around with my Midisport UNO for awhile, I'm wondering if there's any advantage to the ebuild for this device. I managed to get mine working just by plugging it in. The USB link light started slowly flashing, and I was able to use jack to connect rosegarden directly to my ancient Yamaha PSR-500 keyboard without any apparent issues. It appears my version of the UNO comes with firmware already installed out-of-the-box; no need for the Cypress fxload or Midisport firmware. The shrinkwrap it came in claims 'MIDI class compliant in Windows XP and Mac OS', and Linux is class-compliant as well (with the right kernel options chosen). And usbview and lsusb happily display 'USB Uno MIDI Interface' as soon as I plug it in.

Nonetheless, a number of the other Midisport devices do need firmware download, so having an ebuild available is still a good idea.

The firmware loader is mainly for the other devices (1x1, 2x2, etc), which are much less intelligent and need to have firmware uploaded over USB when they are plugged in. I had an Uno, but it had a few problems (known hardware bug on old MIDI devices), so I'm getting a 1x1; I'll need the loader.

Thanks for the info on the bugzilla. I'll put it up.
