what ebuild are you using? the one from bug #251335?
are you running a 32 or 64bit system?

according to the changelog 64bit guests should be supported on 64bit hosts since version 2.0.0. unforunately i never had any luck on my 64bit installation with virtualbox-ose up to 2.0.6. yes, i have hardware visualization support enabled in the bios.
now 64bit guests should even be supported on 32bit hosts... let's see what happens.

I installed XP64 under gentoo 64 3 days ago with the ebuilds that are in my overlay (link in my sig). I got them from a user on git-hub. I did see a BUG on the install once during when I had my quad core heavily loaded but repeating the operation worked fine the second time.

[EDIT]The ebuilds were from Frank Szczerba's git fork of Daniel Robbins's git. [/EDIT]

[EDIT2]I also installed a 64 bit gentoo guest under a 64 bit gentoo host last night. This time I used host networking[/EDIT2]

[EDIT3] I am using a 2.6.26 openvz kernel[/EDIT3]

64bit guests work here too since one hour.
a bios update did the trick. i think it was a bug in the bios that prevented intel/vt to work properly.

Unfortunately I have not been able to get 64bit guests to work. Though I do not have virtual extensions available for my core2 E2180 so there is no bios option. I'm running a 64bit host... just cant seem to get it to work. I also have tried with VMware workstation 2.5.1. Any help on this would most appreciated.

the documentation subsection 1.6.1 says that you need hardware virtualization for 64bit guests.
you are right, this processor (actually called pentium, not core, dispite the core core) does not have hardware virtualization support.
i am afraid you are out of luck here.

Thanks ... It seems that I'll have to use Qemu. It seems to be the only virtualization tool the supports 64bit guests with my setup. The only draw back is Qemu is really slow...

It's slow because it does processor and system emulation. The slowest part will be the IO.

I was going to ask you if you were sure you did not have VT instructions but I see some core(2) chips did not have them:

I actually have this chip here: http://ark.intel.com/cpu.aspx?groupId=31733 I have it overclocked now to prevent having to purchase a new one. VT is greyed out in Virtualbox, and isn't available. I have only had success with Qemu and 64bit guests, and this slows me down tremendously. I might be forced to upgrade.

I tried but could not find it, in either of the tables. I guess a search would have been in order...

Well if intel says there is no VT then there is no hope with that. Do you really need a 64 bit guest?
