My apparently neverending quest for just the right applications for my old laptop has led to me a combination of openbox, tint, multi-aterm (perhaps soon to be replaced by mrxvt -- basically I just want low resource usage and support for black backgrounds and coloured text, tabs and Asian languages/cjk), sylpheed, gnumeric, PCManfm, and a few other programs.

I like tint very much; it's easily-configured using a text file, and it looks so sleek and simple. I set it up so that it displays just the icons without text, and it's a bit lopsided because even when the font size is set to 0, it still allocated space for it, but that's acceptable. Unfortunately, some programs such as VirtualBox OpenOffice (no, I'm not running these on my laptop -- I'm running them on my desktop; I use tint there because I like it so much right now)and just won't display icons on it. They make a space on the bar, but it's just a black greyish space with no icon in it.

Most programs do display icons on it, especially since I installed lxappearance and switched to the Gnome icon theme. (Perhaps there is an easier way to do this, but I know not what) However, it didn't fix all of them, and I would like to figure this out so that I could see the right icons for all my programs in tint. It seems that someone else had this problem and posted about it on the project site this summer, but they haven't fixed it since then. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Here is a screenshot that I took while running VirtualBox. Note how the third and sixth "icons" are just blank space, and the second looks like a generic terminal instead of Gnome-Terminal's actual icon:

Sorry for the clutter; I made it as a demonstration of loading Korean web sites in Linux and IE7. The first icon on tint is Firefox, the second is Gnome-Terminal (this icon now loads correctly as a result of installing and selecting the gnome icon theme in lxapperance), the third is VirtualBox's main (starting) window, the fourth and fifth are The GIMP, and the sixth is fo the VirtualBox XP VM's window.

I wonder if I could just copy virtualbox-ose.png to the correct directory to make it work, but I've tried copying it into the gnome theme's directory and it wouldn't work. It would probably work fine if I could edit/configure the theme to include the icon... maybe.

Moved from Desktop Environments to Unsupported Software.
Tint is not in Portage, thus moved here.

Thanks, Commander Keen (another great game for me to play in DOSBox; I should have remembered it earlier). Anyway, I need to remember the right categories.. I forgot because it's in my local portage overlay.

I just keyworded and installed virtualbox-ose-2.0.6 (it wouldn't compile with gcc-4.3.2-r2, so I used gcc-4.1.2), and the icon appears. I'm reinstalling OpenOffice to see if that will help the icons appear in that program, too.

Code:

cat ~/.gtkrc-2.0
gtk-icon-theme-name = "Tango"
gtk-theme-name = "Clearlooks"
gtk-font-name = "Bitstream Vera Sans 10"

style "user-font"
{
        font_name = "Bitstream Vera Sans 8"
}

widget_class "*" style "user-font"

do you have a gtkrc-2.0 file?

Yes:

Code:
# DO NOT EDIT!  This file will be overwritten by LXAppearance.
# Any customization should be done in ~/.gtkrc-2.0.mine

gtk-theme-name="Raleigh"
gtk-icon-theme-name="gnome"
gtk-font-name="Sans 10"
gtk-toolbar-style=2
include "/home/jeremy/.gtkrc-2.0.mine"
