Dear kde fans

If you are looking for a stable kde but with all bugfixes immediately available - this overlay is for you.

Based on the genkde4svn overlay we are checking out the latest stable branch of kde instead of trunk. This basically means that you won't have any major breakage but a stable desktop with the bugfixes when you need them.

Currently the overlay will checkout the 4.2 branch for the kde apps that are branched. For all other apps like digikam, amarok and such the svn version is still used. The overlay is hosted here on github.com.

Please note that you need paludis in order to use that overlay. Here is a sample paludis repository file:
Code:

#/etc/paludis/repositories/genkde4branch.conf
location = /usr/local/portage-overlays/genkde4branch
format = ebuild
sync = git://github.com/Phlogiston/genkde4branch.git
profiles =/usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/x86/2008.0/desktop/ /usr/local/portage-overlays/genkde4branch/profiles/base
master_repository = gentoo
names_cache = /var/cache/paludis/names

For instructions how to set everything up, read the section "PALUDIS SETTINGS GUIDE" in the README file in the overlay.

We are currently 2 developers/users - so if you are running in troubles please report the issue right here and we'll try our best to sort them out. If you want to get involved feel free to contact us.

Thanks
Phlogiston

PS: Of course don't report any bugs / issues to the gentoo bug tracker nor the mailstation.de bugtracker of the genkde4svn overlay.
PS2: You can easily switch from the genkde4svn overlay to this. Just change the repo file and reinstall all the packages.

Hi, Phlogiston.

I wanna switch to stable, but i don't understand a couple of things.

In /etc/paludis/repositories i have 3 files: gentoo.conf, installed.conf and kde.conf. This last file have this form:

# Config generated by: /usr/bin/playman, version 0.1.5
location = /var/paludis/repositories/kde
format = ebuild
sync = git://www2.mailstation.de/git/genkde4svn.git

master_repository = gentoo
names_cache = ${location}/.cache/names
write_cache = /var/cache/paludis/metadata

I must create another file, genkde4branch.conf with the same form, but with the necessary changes (/var/paludis/repositories/genkde4branch and the git)?

After in /etc/paludis/keywords.conf.d i have: genkdesvn-extras.conf kde-devel-scm.conf kdebase-scm.conf kde-dependencies.conf kde-scm.conf

and in /etc/paludis/package_unmask.conf.d i have: genkdesvn-extras.conf kde-dependencies.conf kde-devel-scm.conf kde-scm.conf

This files remain so?

And, at the end, excuse and sorry for my bad english, in /var/paludis/repositories i have the dir kde/: must remain so this too?

All because i have created the file /etc/paludis/genkde4branch.conf, so as i have write before, but if i sync x-genkde4branch, the dir genkde4branch is created in /var/paludis/repositories, but i obtain many error messages from paludis.

Excuse for the questions maybe stupids, but i don't know exactly how make the switch....? ? :(

Thanks for answers, if they come.

Yes if you want so: You create that new file yes and then remove the old kde.conf file and the old directory.
Then sync with x-genkde4branch and so on...

Yes, those keywords stay the same. Maybe you need to unmask all packages as from official portage all newer kde versions are hardmasked.

You could do that with an entry like:

*/*::kde4-experimental

in package_unmask.conf.

as I wrote above, you can remove that after you disabled (-> removed the repo file) the old svn repo.

Please post/paste these error messages if you still get them.

Thanks Phlogi for the answer.

I have ever problems.

1. I have created the genkde4branch.conf in /etc/paludis:

location = /var/paludis/repositories/genkde4branch
format = ebuild
sync = git://github.com/Phlogiston/genkde4branch.git

master_repository = gentoo
names_cache = ${location}/.cache/names
write_cache = /var/cache/paludis/metadata

Ok.

2. I have renamed kde.conf in kde.conf.old (i think is the same as remove)

3. I have renamed /var/paludis/repositories/kde in kde.orig

4. I must also remove the links keywords.conf.d and package_unmask.conf.d in /etc/paludis because they are now "nothing" (was links to /var/paludis/repositories/kde/Documentation/*, but now the dir have another name)

5. Now paludis -s x-genkde4branch:

EZLN-Gentoo paludis # paludis -s x-genkde4branch
paludis@1233346277: [QA e.repo_name.unusable] Couldn't open repo_name file in '/var/paludis/repositories/genkde4branch/profiles/', falling back to generated name 'x-genkde4branch' (ignore this message if you have yet to sync this repository).

Sync x-genkde4branch

6. I have recreated the links in /etc/paludis

7. Now, if i sync genkde4branch:

The name is still kde4-expermintal and not genkde4branch. 8)

So do:

paludis -s kde4-experimental

Thanks again. I recompile all now. But i have recompiled all yesterday and all is good and nice on my notebook: thanks for the fantastic work.

Well, after having kdesvn from the genkde4svn blow up in my face after installing it all, think I'll try this, the middleground between the cutting edge kde-svn and kde-4.2, with the bug fixes applied. Got tired of having to hack away at the genkde4svn overlay just to get the thing to compile, just hope the playground-plasma and everything like that works with the branch. :D

hehe, it should at least if you compile it right after I did and fixed the stuff. But just report whats broken here. Oh, and patches are welcome 8)

All right, well, a few things to note, just general things really, but worth remembering, strigi will fail to compile if dbus is not active, due to it failing on the make test phase of the ebuild. Nothing too surprising, just something to note. Had a problem with kwin, but it was just it for some reason not pulling in one of the external resources, seems to be fixed. Also I think a qt-4.5_rc1 error but if you try to compile it with the kde phonon, you have to give a symbolic link from /usr/kde/svn/lib/libphonon.so to /usr/lib/libphonon.so, otherwise it will spit out a cannot find -lphonon type error. What I've encountered so far with kdebase, but these aren't really specific to the overlay, which seems to work all right, haven't really had too many problems specifically with the overlay. :)

Hello.

Only an info.

As you can see from my posts, i have configured all (with precious help of Phlogi) for the forked stable genkdesvn.

Now, a question:

I sync with paludis -s kde4-experimental---->OK

After, if i wanna recompiled all, i use: paludis -i --dl-reinstall-scm always (weekly, daily) genkdesvn-all----> it is correct?

Thanks in advance for answers and sorry for my bad english.

Excuse if the question seem to be idiot.:)

Well, got through the whole install, and for some reason strigi just plain was not working. So none of the nepomuk stuff was working really either, it worked with the svn, one odd thing is that trying to run strigidaemon would cause it to not be able to load say the clucene indexer, so it would just fail out, and trying to symbolic link it sort of worked, but it still didn't work at all in KDE. Also in the latest Nepomuk would have a nice little icon in the tray which would display if it was indexing anything or whatever, that wasn't there either. Going to try to reinstall and see if it works then. *crosses fingers*...

I'm recompiling now and will fix any problems tomorrow btw.

Post the output of nepomuk when installing, I mean the configuration part at the beginning.

Many thanks, Phlogi, for the answer.
The compilation go ok, but i have a strange problem: with semantic-desktop and indexing of files activated and with lancelot on desktop, my 2 core (core2 duo intel E6420 3 GB ram) are at 100%; i have disabled nepomuk-services and lancelot, because the system was obviously unusable....boh..?? Now with this "workaround" the DE it's ok, but....

Thanks again.

i encountered this -lphonon error today, first time using this overlay, never had this issue when using kde-testing overlay, qt-webkit and media-libs/phonon worked fine there but with this overlay qt-webkit fails, thanks though for the hint about the symlink...........

..... symlinks fix 85% of gentoo compile errors :D

Hmm I had that problem as well, but I'm not sure if its a good idea to fix that in the ebuild. What do you think?
