Hello all... I am following the document in gentoo wiki about setting up nagios on Gentoo. It does not seem to add up and seems to be missing steps! Is there a down and dirty doc that anyone knows of that could get at least a basic dashboard running. The issue seems to be the path of where Nagios is installed, it is not anywhere relative to the document root in apache (which is std /var/www/localhost/htdocs).

ANY help is much appreciated!

It does not and also absolutely should not be installed into the apache document root.
Maybe this one helps a bit:
/etc/apache2/modules.d/99_nagios.conf
Code:
ScriptAlias /nagios/cgi-bin/ /usr/lib/nagios/cgi-bin/
        <Directory "/usr/lib/nagios/cgi-bin/">
                AllowOverride AuthConfig
                Options ExecCGI
                Order allow,deny
                Allow from all
        </Directory>
        Alias /nagios /usr/share/nagios/htdocs
        <Directory "/usr/share/nagios/htdocs">
                AllowOverride AuthConfig
                Order allow,deny
                Allow from all
        </Directory>

That's a very simple one without authentification etc.

Thank you for the prompt response. That is already what I have but I did add the .htaccess doc to /usr/share/nagios/htdocs and /usr/lib/nagios/cgi-bin and it is as follows:

Code:

g2vm htdocs # cat .htaccess
AuthName "Nagios Access"
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /etc/nagios/auth.users
Require valid-user

g2vm htdocs # ls /etc/nagios/auth.users
/etc/nagios/auth.users
g2vm htdocs # cat /etc/nagios/auth.users
nagiosadmin:rQLuC4zMKyVHA

It seems that the /etc/apache2/modules.d/99_nagios3.conf is responsible to provide apache a "dir" relative to the root!?!? With this I do not even get a chance to authenticate. This cannot be that hard :)

Ah, I had an earlier version on my Gentoo home box.

It looks like you need to add "-D NAGIOS" in /etc/conf.d/apache2 @ APACHE2_OPTS

It says
Code:
<IfDefine NAGIOS>
        ScriptAlias ....

in the default apache config meanwhile.
