Hi all,

I have had another go at the pdf, this time in the same style as the web page.

This one is based upon the install document dated 11/08/2003.

Gentoo_Linux_x86_Install_11-08-03.pdf

Oh yeah,

Forgot to mention:

The hyperlinks now work in the PDF, both external urls and internal page jumps, ie. click on the contents list to jump to the correct page. Not really usefull in print, but handy on your comp. :)

A very nice formatted PDF indeed. Perhaps it is also good to know (if you didn't already of course) that we provide "printable" documentation too: just append "?style=printable" to the url: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gentoo-x86-install.xml?style=printable. This doesn't provide a PDF, but is certainly more printable :)

Where is this documented? It's not anywhere on the x86 install page, nor on the Gentoo home page. It's a really great feature to have (I wish I knew of this when I was printing out the web page), but to paraphrase an old college freshman philosophy class question -- if you build a feature, and do not document it, does it exist?

Not all the doc pages seem to work with
Code:
?style=printable
seems only about half.

OT: where does one post suggestions for change recommendations regarding the docs as well? Not bug fixes, just suggestions?

And if add http://www.easysw.com/htmldoc/pdf-o-matic.php to the above, you will have PDF.

It seems the best way is to file a bugzilla report, which I already did for this issue. One of the options for bug filing is "enhancement", as opposed to "critical".

Its indeed true that some guides don't work with it. If you find some, please say so -- they need to get fixed.

There's also good news: daniel robbins is working on PDFs for our guides :)

Yea! This is great news to come back from holiday to... :D

It always seemed messy to cut'n'paste the PDF, when direct convertions would be better.... :)

I don't know how handy ppl have found the contents page, but that's the only value I've added to the original document (hint hint). :)

Hi all,

I've updated the PDF install file to reflect the latest update of the web instructions (as of the 25/08/2003).

Gentoo_Linux_x86_Install_25-08-03.pdf

Also there are the beginnings of an index at the back, left/right pages have a gutter on the bind side and the hyperlinks still work :)

I am officially getting bored of this cutting and pasting now, but as this level of boredom dips below the work threshold boredom level I shall consider working more on it. (Nothing like a loverly bit of activity displacement when important things must be done ;) )

@Sven

What about a small button somwhere that reloads the URL with an additional "?style=printable" maybe in a new window for easy printing.

Just an idea, though..

This is not working with the x86 version of the docs. Simply do a print preview and you'll notice that more than a few lines are cut off.
