I first started using Gentoo in 2004. I purchased a bleeding-edge GPU in 2006 and tried to use beryl, and later its successors. Although I tried this periodically, I never had a stable system, and trying to keep up with tweaking the overlays was simply not worth the effort, so a unmerged and went back to a stable (in both senses) system.

Now it's two years later. I built a new system and I see that there is not a stable version of compiz. Am I missing something, or has there really been no stable compositing desktop for two years? Can I ever expect to see a stable version?

Well, I've been using 0.7.8 from the desktop-effects overlay since it came out, and it has been perfectly stable, in the functional sense, all along. As far as 'gentoo stable', who knows, but I don't think it will be any time very soon. compiz-fusion is at a bit of a crossroads right now upstream. There isn't much development going on (a few new plugins here and there) and no real direction. Because of this, it has never stabilized from a beta or non-alpha project. Since KDE has started integrating a lot of the same compositing functionality right into the KDE 4 release, KDE users will probably not be using it when they upgrade. Here's a reference for my point from the lead developer. Read his email in that link as well, to get the full description of the state of compiz and compiz-fusion:

Compiz and beryl always lacked a direction. Those guys just wanted something cool to showcase their friends and youtube colleagues. No disrespect intended. I think that they have been a great playground that really took the attention of the people and probably a lot of what has been achieved in the land of compositing wouldn't exist today without these two projects. But now that the above goal has been accomplished (and anyway this is no longer new stuff) people have lost their interest.

At the current state of things, I think that the future of compositing desktops is in the 4.x branch of kwin. You can be sure that kde is not going to be left abandoned unless some Armageddon-ish thing happens. It already supports a good set of features by 4.2 and it improves with each new version at a consistent rate. Though I still fail to see the usefulness of all this stuff.

I am not a kde user or anything. But the gnome and xfce wm's only support shadows and transparencies. Nothing fancy if that's what you want.

i find compiz-fusion to be VERY stable. maybe you should give some more information, for instance I have a good nvidia card and compiz has been perfectly stable for half a year by now.
