Hi,

I have just tried the vmware-server 2.0 on windows. Many new features are add, like the 'shared folder'. I want to know when it will be available in the portage? I am really expect to see it works on my gentoo.

My guess is: when the VMware team decides it is ready to graduate from the VMware overlay to the main tree. Until then, use the overlay.

0000000000000,

What file is that ?

vmware-server was never mirrored by gentoo and should be fetch restricted if it not.
Get the file from vmware, you will have to sign up for a free key, and put it into /usr/portage/downloads so the ebuild can find it.

great, vmware server 2.0 now works on my gentoo 2008 x64.

The VMs are running smoothly. But the admin web manager reports fake error messages from time to time, and may cause both IE8RC1 and FF3.0.6 to halt. The web manager on windows also has this issue., I think this is vmware's problem.

And, about the 'Shared Folder' feature. I was wrong. vmware server 2.0 has a place to set it, but you cannot enable it. And the reason they allow you to set it, is because you may move the vm from server to workstation, where you may enable it. 8O

It works somewhat on my core2 quad. Every time I reboot or change kernels I have to go through extreme hoops to get it working again. I mean delete the /var/run/vmware, /etc/vmware and /var/log/vmware folders then reinstall and then reconfigure. Otherwise the license authentication manager fails to work. And why the heck do I need a license manager for a free product? I am really needing SMP on virtualbox. Does KVM work with guest SMP?

The install process was pretty easy in gentoo.

Code:
layman -a vmware

if you do not already have layman emerge that first

Code:
emerge -av layman

then emerge

Code:
emerge -av =app-emulation/vmware-server-2*

unmask if necessary by properly adding entries in /etc/portage/package.keywords and/or /etc/portage/package.unmask
I do not remember if I needed to unmask anything. I believe fetch restriction is on so you will have to fetch the file from vmware directly and put that into your distfiles folder. Also you do need a license key from them but they generate one for every download.

Hmm, I remember in the past you could specify how many licenses you needed so I choose 100 but now they did not ask..

I have these packages installed:
Code:
jmd0 ~ # equery list vmware -i
[ Searching for package 'vmware' in all categories among: ]
 * installed packages
[I--] [  ] app-emulation/vmware-modules-1.0.0.23 (0)
[I--] [ ~] app-emulation/vmware-server-2.0.0.122956 (0)

And both are from the vmware overlay
Code:
jmd0 ~ # equery which vmware-server
/auto/portage/local/layman/vmware/app-emulation/vmware-server/vmware-server-2.0.0.122956.ebuild

jmd0 ~ # equery which vmware-modules                                            /auto/portage/local/layman/vmware/app-emulation/vmware-modules/vmware-modules-1.0.0.23.ebuild

0000000000000,

When you run at the bleeding edge, expect a few cuts and bruses now and again.

Help us to help you. Post the build log that portage left behind when the emerge failed.
Its in /var/tmp/portage somewhere ... the failure message tells you where.

BTW, my authentication nightmare seems to have completely disappeared and it has been working fine for at least 1 month now.

0000000000000,

The kernel you have there is not compatible with vmware-modules-1.0.0.23.
That happens from time to time with out of kernel modules. The kernel changes and then modules have to be patched to work again.
