Hi there,
I want to buy a printer. It has linux drivers but only as deb and rpm. The instructions on the site here seem not to work.
Is it enough to just unpack the rpm or deb packages and manually copy the files to the right folders?

Clad in Sky,

Tell us about the printer. At the moment, it sounds like you are about to buy the wrong printer.
If the .deb/.rpm files want to install a kernel module, it will need to find the exact kernel it expects, which won't be a gentoo-sources or vanilla-sources kernel.

In general, you can convert rpms to tbz (bzip2 tarballs) then unpick them from there. Usefulness of this process varies.
Check for your printer

Hello,
it's a Brother HL-2140, which according to openprinting works in Linux.
As far as I can see it doesn't want to install a Kernel module. It has a so called cupswrapper, so I guess that'll be fine.

I generally use rpm2tar, extract the files and go from there (may need to figure out where certain files expect to go). Ideally if you can find the source rpm, you can generally figure out how to build it from the spec file that should be included.
