PostPosted: Wed Feb 25, 2009 11:22 am    Post subject: Grub 2.0 build fail + USE flags [SOLVED] Reply with quote

I have /boot on ext2 part, while root & others on ext4. Grub 0.96(?) failed to mount the ext4 at boot and I could not find a way to describe to grub that it was ext4 (commands at the end of grub line like TYPE="ext4" or rootfstype=ext4 did not work). So I decided to emerge grub 2, and followed instructions on http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Grub2 . At the "emerge =sys-boot/grub-9999" command, build terminates with message:
---------------------------------------------------
kern/partition.c:84: warning: generating trampoline in object (requires executable stack)
kern/partition.c: In function `grub_partition_iterate':

* environment, line 2549: Called die
* The specific snippet of code:
* emake -j1 || die "making regular stuff"
* The die message:

-----------------------------------------------------------
So now what?? Separately:

1- When I was first installing the system, grub had to build 0.96 also and failed due to the NETUSE (or something like that) flag. It was able to build after I removed that flag, as suggested in several forums. So, I "#" out all USE flags in make.conf and tried to build grub, but same result.
2- I would also like to know if the below Unset criteria on USE flags is really necessary / useful?
Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL,
3- In case you request a file to be attached please instruct where to attach from, as I could not find the file attach option.
Thank You in advance.

I forgot - I also did below with same result.
ebuild /usr/portage/sys-boot/grub/grub-9999.ebuild digest && emerge =sys-boot/grub-9999

CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO POST A .txt file??
The contents of make.conf are different, and copy/paste from nano does not work very well.

Thanks for the help.

Hi d2_racing:
It has been a while since I posted the thread, and no answer from anyone. So could you tell me if there is a site or forum dedicated to Grub issues / bug report? Maybe I can speed up the process a little.
I have also deleted out a large number of options in my make.conf file, with hope that grub2 would compile, but it terminated with same error. The compile process also states in the very beginning "openpty error - out of pty devices" whatever that means...

Moved from Kernel & Hardware to Unsupported Software as grub2 is not yet supported.

Some random points ... grub-0.9x needs a patch to boot from an ext4 filesystem but it is
available.

When your build died is will have left a message behind saying a full build log is located at /var/tmp/portage/...
We need to see all of that build log to help fix this.

Your unset flags
Quote:
CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, FFLAGS, INSTALL_MASK, LANG, LC_ALL,
are ok.

You appear to be running a hardened 32 bit system. This warning
Code:
kern/partition.c:84: warning: generating trampoline in object (requires executable stack)
means the resulting code is broken on hardened unless you turn off protection against executable stacks. Executable stacks being an attack vector.
If grub needs to run this code to install, it should fail. If it runs at boot time before the kernel is loaded, it will be ok.

Code:
./include/grub/i386/tsc.h:32: error: PIC register `%rbx' clobbered in `asm'
points to a problem in the source code.
ebuilds with version numbers of -9999 point to source code repositories when the code is under active development. It may not build at any given time. If it builds, it may not work at all or as you expect. It may even drink all your beer.

The main point here is that only the first error in the log is significant, so we need the entire build log.

Mr. Seagoon:
Thx for the reply. As first order of business, beer was evacuated to secure location.

1. /boot resides on ext2, so no patch needed (?) root is ext4.
2. system is hardened; but 64 bit. Should I disable hardened features in make.conf before emerging grub2 (the problem being that G2 does not build/install)?
3. Stupid question, but could not figure out how to attach txt file to message...
OK - looks like all posts are the output itself and no attach file option. So,

Which would make me think whatever your problem is, it is not related to grub. Grub only needs to be able to read your kernel. Looks like you've wasted a lot of time fiddling with unsupported grub2 based on a wrong assumption.

polsas,

grub-static should work for you. You. Thats grub-0.97 with its 32 bit code pre built.
It works with ext2 but there is one proviso, you need 128 byte inodes, which is is the usual default.

Check with
Code:
$ sudo /sbin/dumpe2fs /dev/md0 | grep size
dumpe2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)
Block size:               1024
Fragment size:            1024
Inode size:             128
Put your /boot partition in place of /dev/md0

Sir: Thanks to you and to neysx for the reply, Grub2 was uninstalled, g 0.97 -r9 emerged and setup to previous config of boot proces. My original problem persists however, that being unable to mount root. Screen output of boot process:

* input: AT Translated set 2 keyboard .... blah blah
* input ImPS2 Generic mouse ....blah blah
* Root-NFS: No NFS Server available, giving up.
* VFS: Unable to mount root fs via NFS, try floppy
* Insert root floppy & <enter> (enter pressed)
* VFS: cannot open root device "UUID=blah blah" or unknown-block(2,0)
* Plese append correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions:
* Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block

1) /dev/hda1 is lock size: 1024 Fragment size: 1024 Inode size: 128
2) Makes no difference booting in regular or single user mode (of course)
3) UUID's are correct & <edit> options to replace root=UUID (like /dev/hda2)
at Grub boot menu result in same.
4) hardened.config options for FS at kernel compile are:

The box is being configured as a corporate do-all server, so for file server LAMP + NFS is needed, right? Some terminals will be diskless & use sunray (or the like) to boot from ethernet card.

Try "root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/e02fe8b6-8c5f-4b7c-b699-d2a6195b1270" type format in grub.conf.

polsas,

That your kernel starts tells us that grub did what ir was supposed to do and loaded your kernel into RAM and passed control to it.
When you see the message decompressing kernel ... grub is done.

Code:
* Root-NFS: No NFS Server available, giving up.
* VFS: Unable to mount root fs via NFS, try floppy
tells that either the root filesystem is not described correctly on the kernel line in grub.conf or a piece of the hard drive controller software is missing from the kernel, or possibly both.

Please post your grub.conf and your lspci output.

polsas,

The kernel needs a patch to use
Code:
root=UUID=2e7ac491-67c7-4a46-b080-49db97d19e6d
in grub.cong and I'm fairly sure gentoo kernels don't have it.

Your disk controlers are
Code:
00:02.5 IDE interface [0101]: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] [1039:5513] (rev 01) (prog-if 80 [Master]) 00:05.0 RAID bus controller [0104]: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] RAID bus controller 180 SATA/PATA  [SiS] [1039:0180] (rev 01) (prog-if 85)

There are two drivers in the kernel for your IDE chip set and one for the SATA chip set. I recommend you use the new driver. It will make your drive appear with a SCSI name. Follow this post with one exception.

Under
Code:
<*> Serial ATA (prod) and Parallel ATA (experimental) drivers  --->
choose only
Code:
[*]   ATA SFF support
<*>     SiS 964/965/966/180 SATA support
<*>     SiS PATA support

Helo Again:
Fist, good news, kernel now boots with root=/dev/sda2.
Now the bad news; several:
1. Boot is slow due to "device not ready err-16 forcing hardreset" process. triess to config UDMA for several values for several devices, including the CD-ROM. You warn against this in your article, and I followed what you describe (i think?) but could not fix this problem.
2. "fdisk -l" shows disk size as 33 GB, while the disk is 120 GB
3. Unable to find eth0, this is of course a config menu error, but "sis900" is selected - is there a conflict with the other selected devices?
4. gives error unable to run, or locate something > scsi_wait_scan.ko & test_nx.ko. These are included in the etc/modules.autoload file & the .ko files are under /lib/modules as should be.
5. UUID's for partitions are all same - how & why do I need to change Grub menu & fstab for this? Did I misunderstand something?

MAKE CONFIG file below - sure whish you guys had an option to just upload / attach files.
Sorry for the hassle & have a good weekend.

polsas,

Lets do the easy ones first ...
Quote:
2. "fdisk -l" shows disk size as 33 GB, while the disk is 120 GB

33GB is on of the BIOS 'magic' numbers for hard drive limits. However, Linux can read your entire drive and should report the correct sizes once its booted. Examine the drive jumper settings. They are normally detailed on the drive label. Is clipping enabled ?
If it is, you may need it to boot. Try configuring the drive without it and see what happens.
You can get the drive information from hdparm -iI /dev... and google the jumper settings if you prefer.

Quote:
3. Unable to find eth0, this is of course a config menu error, but "sis900" is selected - is there a conflict with the other selected devices?

Are you running the kernel that comes from the configuration you posted ?
The .config has an embedded timestamp of # Sat Mar 7 13:41:32 2009 what does the date and time in
Code:
uname -a

show?
Thats the date/time the running kernel was made, so it should be after Sat Mar 7 13:41:32 2009, or the config file is newer than your kernel. That would indicate something went wrong with your kernel install.
Quote:
4. gives error unable to run, or locate something > scsi_wait_scan.ko & test_nx.ko. These are included in the etc/modules.autoload file & the .ko files are under /lib/modules as should be.

Names in etc/modules.autoload... do not have the .ko extension. This can also be caused if you are running a different kernel to the one you thought you were.
Quote:

5. UUID's for partitions are all same - how & why do I need to change Grub menu & fstab for this? Did I misunderstand something?
The UUIDs are supposed to be unique but you cannot use them in grub.conf or in /etc/fstab on Gentoo. You need a kernel patch for that to work.
Quote:
1. Boot is slow due to "device not ready err-16 forcing hardreset" process. triess to config UDMA for several values for several devices, including the CD-ROM. You warn against this in your article, and I followed what you describe (i think?) but could not fix this problem.
I've been thinking about this while I was writing. Can you post the piece of the dmesg that shows your hard drive being detected ... from start to finish?

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail.

Thanks for all your help NS, really appreciate it.
going by your ordering of the list:

2. [SOLVED] "fdisk -l" shows wrong disk size: was simple jumper problem.
3. eth0 not found: Kernel build process had shown a bunch of time skew; I had thought I would get to this later. I re-built the kernel today and no time skew. Booted kernel is latest kernel. No difference.
4. [SOLVED] modules won't load err: with new err, test_nx hangs and system freezes
5. UUID in fstab & menu.lst: Rather than building UUID driver into kernel then, what do you suggest using in gentoo as route, /dev/sda# - seems to work but is there anything better, since sd _ _ can change depending on booting device.
1. dmesg:

polsas,

Use /dev/sda1 formats for now. As you say, drive numbering can change but only if you add/remove hardware from the case, which should be fairly rare. USB drives should get numbers above internal drives.

Everything looks good for you network card. Its in your kernel, the hardware seems to get I/O and an IRQ allocation, in your dmesg but the hardware is not detected subsequently. Please make SIS900 support modular so we can see when its loaded and load/unload it to play with module parameters.

We are looking for something like
Code:
[   40.616870] sis900.c: v1.08.10 Apr. 2 2006
[   40.617239] ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:04.0[A] -> GSI 19 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
[   40.619008] 0000:00:04.0: Realtek RTL8201 PHY transceiver found at address 1.
[   40.628220] 0000:00:04.0: Using transceiver found at address 1 as default
[   40.629450] eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xe800, IRQ 17, 00:01:6c:a9:7e:a8
in dmesg.

I'm doing the eth0 modular now and will try to advise shortly.
Just as a reminder:
- The HDD still boots slow - I suppose you will need some time with that.
- box freezes when trying to load test_nx - I am guessing not such a crucial component?
----------------------
OK, ran the kernel & 5 new modules were created: sis900, 8139too, forcedeth, mii, e100. these were added to autostart, now eth0 boots up and gives no error. New dmesg slice of ko loads:
Code:
[  126.375795] Freeing unused kernel memory: 416k freed

[  128.412348] eth0: SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet at 0xe200, IRQ 19, 00:01:6c:c0:83:e3

[  128.474252] mii: exports duplicate symbol generic_mii_ioctl (owned by kernel)
[  128.484546] e100: Intel(R) PRO/100 Network Driver, 3.5.23-k6-NAPI

[  128.484559] Error: Driver 'e100' is already registered, aborting...

I don't get it - some modules give the message that process is already owned by kernel, while others do not. Ex: e100 which was a module previously selected for kernel level, shows no conflict so the kernel which is booting is the new one since I had just demoted it to module level...

Do you need the log file for networking also?

polsas,

You made a mess of your kernel build and install.
You have managed to get some modules as both built in as modules, which is not allowed.

It can happen if you update the modules only and don't copy the new kernel to /boot either at all, or incorrectly.

The only sure way to fix it is to rebuild and reinstall the kernel, beginning with the
Code:
make clean
step. This ensures there are no binary files lying around to be reused.

NS, thanks for the diagnostic.

Ran "make clean" as instructed & re-built everything. The build process made more sense this time, as previous builds left questions in my mind and, which I had asked in a previous thread. I was told in that thread that everything was ok, but as I said some things did not make sense to me - now they do. Results:
1.slow disk error [SOLVED]
2. sr_mod seems to freeze but boot is able to move on after considerable hang. but when loading test_nx boot completely freezes & halts.
3. eth0 could not get that far in boot. I use the min-install-cd on my usb stick to re-boot & nano the autoload file, but now my usb stick is corupted so I have to fiddlearound with that.
-----------------------------
Well, there has been a certainly interesting development: Since my usb stick got corrupted, I had to boot with my other usb stick which contains the "rescue cd" installation, which is based on gentoo distro. The boot process in rescue cd hung while "searching for scsi: rs_mod". So it must be some sort of hardware incompatability...
I re-compiled the kernel & went through all options once more. system now boots eth0.
Remaining questions is, what do I do about sr_mod? Kernel waits for this even if I remove from autoload.

polsas,

sr_mod is the kernel module for CDROM/DVD drives.
If you don't have such a drive, you don't need it and can configure it out of the kernel.
Thats a worthwhile test anyway and you need not remake your kernel.

Loading modules for hardware you don't have is mostly harmless but if they can't find hardware to control, they generally wait for a timeout before they stop looking.

The quick and dirty test. Find sr_mod.ko in
Code:
modprobe -l
and rename it, so it can't be loaded. Does this fix the boot 'hang'
If you have a CDROM, you will need to rename it back to get your CDROM to work.

Is there anything in dmesg ?
In these circumstances, dmesg is more useful if you have printk timestamps on. CONFIG_PRINTK_TIME=y which you do.

Dear Sir:

Thanks for all of your help. The kernel hang problem solved with rename and system boots in a blink. CD-ROM is not working, but that's really not a priority for me now, plus I am sure there are plenty of threads discussing how to get cd-r to work. I will look through those later.
Thanks Again.

After having an issue with root=UUID=<some uuid> I stumbled upon this thread. Searching for a kernel patch for UUID usage, I've found out, that such a patch apparently doesn't exist. So it isn't because Gentoo doesn't this non-exsistant patch.

The reason why it doesn't work on most Gentoo-installs, is that Gentoo (unlike many other distros) does not use initrds that include udev functionality, that actually enables the use of the UUIDs. So in order to use root=UUID or root=LABEL in grub, an initramfs with udev support has to be supplied.

I hope this clear things up a bit.

Update: here's my source for the above info: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61080
