2.7.0 is the new "stable" release. And 9999 version of any package (sometimes it's 99999999 for longer naming) get's you the current master git - that's whatever devs are currently working on, so definitely not stable.

xorg.conf
Code:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier  "Keyboard0"
        Driver      "kbd"
        Option      "XkbModel" "pc104"
        Option      "XkbLayout" "us+inet"
        Option      "XkbOptions" "compose:ralt"
EndSection

I am using this laptop

EDIT: I hadn't re-emerged the drivers.

You should migrate your input settings to hal management and evdev, furthermore drop your input lines in xorg.conf.

Ok, general report time.
Using Intel 2.7, xorg-server 1.6, mesa 7.4 and kernel 2.6.29.1 on a ThinkPad T500 w/ the Intel X4500HD GPU
What doesn't work:
-KMS works in framebuffer console mode.. but as soon as I get into X with KMS it's like it tries to set the screen resolution too high and I see only very blurry overscanned fuzz
-supposedly this issue with UXA and compiz (version 8.2) and the white/yellow artifacts on transperancies was fixed between mesa 7.4 and intel 2.7, but I still get it especially in wine and briefly in other apps too. May be that something isn't linked to mesa properly or some other config problem...
-Occasionally in compiz I get a gma45 vblank sync error in dmesg. Normally harmless, but when using dual screens it seems to make the entire system so laggy its almost unusable.

What works: everything else (even suspend to ram now too!)

Has anyone else fixed these issues? Anyone have working UXA with KMS in compiz? or even KMS in plain X?

P.S. Where the hell is the ebuild for xorg server 1.6 r1? That could help.

FWIW, for me intel 2.7.0, xorg 1.6.0, mesa 7.4 and kernel 2.6.29 (tuxonice)
with KMS works extremely well in both X and console. Sleep and
hibernation also works apparently perfectly (this is an improvement
for me over earlier setups).

Thinkpad x300 (so intel video GM965).

I did the kernel patch thing to get 2.7.0 working right BTW.
(https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-756902-highlight-.html)

The only thing - it takes a long time for KMS to get going during bootup;
the screen changes resolution as the init scripts start and after the kernel
loads ... I don't know/understand if that's unusual or not :)

My current working GM45 setup:
git-sources-2.6.30_rc2-r7-patch-i915 (you need the patch to make xf86-video-intel-2.7.0 actually work)
xorg-server-1.6.1 (fixed X resetting (2.6.29) and freezing (2.6.30))
xf86-video-intel-9999 (2.7.0 made X reset every once in a while)

Which option should I use in grub to have the console resolution in say vga=771 mode. Currently when I use that the screen goes blank until X starts

Does your kernel-line in grub config looks similar to that from the guide?
Code:
kernel /example-kernel-2.6.29 root=/dev/root i915.modeset=1

2.6.29.2 still needs the i915 tiling-patch for xf86-video-intel-2.7.0.

I have done this in my kernel
Code:

Device Drivers  --->
    Graphics support  --->
        ...
        <*> Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)  --->
            <*>   Intel 830M, 845G, 852GM, 855GM, 865G (i915 driver)  --->
                  <*> i915 driver
                    [*] Enable modesetting on intel by default

Remove vga=771 from grub.conf and reboot - KMS would provide a nice terminal for you. As far as I know, you cannot use VGA and KMS in parallel.

Is the kernel patch for 2.7.0 still needed with 2.6.30_rc3 or is it included?

Still needed, and still works with that version.

Disable all of that. KMS replaces the framebuffer. You also don't need a vga= or video= option in grub. Make you have Device Drivers->Graphics support->Console display driver support->Framebuffer Console Support enabled though.

I simply used the automization of the ebuild system. Copied over the git-sources-2.6.30_rc3.ebuild into my own overlay, put the patch into the files subdirectory in there and added one single line to the ebuild:

UNIPATCH_LIST="${FILESDIR}/i915-2.6.30_rc2-r7.patch"

Or just download the patch, name it is <insert_name_here>.patch, head over to /usr/src/linux and say:
Code:

patch -p1 < <location_of_patch>/<patch>

Done! :) -> I prefer this -> since I just use a hand/based git setup to update the kernel.

Ebuilds are fun :D I just made myself vanilla-sources-2.6.30_rc3 with the patch ;] Tried gentoo-sources first, but had some problems and was too tired to try and understand.

I like my approach where, thinking of the next kernel-upgrade (typically happening a few days later), the patches will get applied automagically again. ;)

Also, this works for automatically applying all featured patches to the ebuild:
UNIPATCH_LIST="${FILESDIR}/*.patch"

Lots of commits to Linus' kernel ~10 hours ago: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=summary
Including the i915 tiling fix. So it'll definitely be included with the next minor release, if not already present in 2.6.30_rc3-r5.

Disable all of that. KMS replaces the framebuffer. You also don't need a vga= or video= option in grub. Make you have Device Drivers->Graphics support->Console display driver support->Framebuffer Console Support enabled though.

It's still not workin and I think I have follwed your instructions

The changes I made are in bold, please use this config and then try. This is working for me.

EDIT: Apparently, no bold inside code blocks - but you can see the tags around it. These are the values that I have changed.

Another general update:
kernel 2.6.30-rc4 vanilla-sources works great in KMS with intel 2.7.0 with no patch!
Now I just need to patch vmware-modules to work with it... so I can have nice graphics AND vmware. (imagine that!)
I guess that wil be my next post.

The tiling patch is include in rc4 -> therefore no need to patch. :)

Rahulthewal I made the changes after upgrading to the latest vanilla-sources. The console font is still the default huge font.

Code:

root linux # cat .config | grep ENDIAN
CONFIG_FB_FOREIGN_ENDIAN=y
CONFIG_FB_BOTH_ENDIAN=y
# CONFIG_FB_BIG_ENDIAN is not set
# CONFIG_FB_LITTLE_ENDIAN is not set
root linux # cat .config | grep EDID
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID=y
root linux # cat .config | grep MODE_HELPERS
CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y
root linux # cat .config | grep TILEBLITTING
CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING=y

Code:

title Gentoo Linux 2.6.30-4 (GUI)
root (hd0,9)
kernel /kernel-x86-2.6.30-4 root=/dev/sda7 resume=/dev/sda5 softlevel=gui

EDIT: Hmm just thought of something. Using vanilla-sources will have an impact on this right?
