Rahulthewal I made the changes after upgrading to the latest vanilla-sources. The console font is still the default huge font.

Code:

root linux # cat .config | grep ENDIAN
CONFIG_FB_FOREIGN_ENDIAN=y
CONFIG_FB_BOTH_ENDIAN=y
# CONFIG_FB_BIG_ENDIAN is not set
# CONFIG_FB_LITTLE_ENDIAN is not set
root linux # cat .config | grep EDID
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID=y
root linux # cat .config | grep MODE_HELPERS
CONFIG_FB_MODE_HELPERS=y
root linux # cat .config | grep TILEBLITTING
CONFIG_FB_TILEBLITTING=y

Code:

title Gentoo Linux 2.6.30-4 (GUI)
root (hd0,9)
kernel /kernel-x86-2.6.30-4 root=/dev/sda7 resume=/dev/sda5 softlevel=gui

EDIT: Hmm just thought of something. Using vanilla-sources will have an impact on this right?

Code:

/etc/conf.d/consolefont

Edit this file for consolefont.

Changed the below

Code:

CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=m
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY is not set
# CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION is not set

to look like

Code:

CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_DETECT_PRIMARY=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y

Argh new problem with my KMS in 2.6.30_rc4, intel 2.7 (thinkpad T500)
I can't detect a 2nd VGA screen unless the vga cable is plugged in at bootup time (using gnome-display-manager) :/
makes me very sad. this worked before in .29 without KMS.

Also I'm still getting the same crash as before occasionally when using compiz (only the mouse moves very choppy and doing anything else is almost impossible)

After a recent update (~x86 and X11-Overlay) I now can only start Xorg as root. As a user X immediately shuts down with no errors.
Downgrading from xorg-server.1.6.1.910 to 1.6.1 didn't help, and well, as root it does work good.
I already checked if maybe a new group has been added, but nothing in that direction, or maybe some hal thingy?

Anyone any ideas?

I am having the same issues after an emerge -uD world.
Currently I'm using kernel 2.6.31-r2, but the problem started before I upgraded the kernel. It happened on 2.6.30-r6 as well. (BOTH gentoo-sources)

I've been fighting this for a week now. As I recall, the problem started with some errors during emerge world about libxcb. I've since found this http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/desktop/x/x11/libxcb-1.4-upgrade-guide.xml and followed, which cleared up any errors referencing libxcb. I have upgraded the kernel, I have tried several versions of xf86-video-intel, I've re-emerged all the x11-drivers, I've tried several versions of xorg-server, several versions of xorg-x11. I've tried with and without an xorg.conf file (before the updating my X worked fine without any xorg.conf).

I've been googling for days. I've rebuilt the kernel many times. I've tried w KMS, without KMS, I've tried building the drivers into kernel and I've built them as modules. I've turned framebuffer options on, and I've turned them off.

This is what is happening:
As a normal user, typing X yields a black screen. Same for root user. At first, I couldn't even Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get back to a console, but I fixed that by adding a hal config file for the keyboard. But the screen is just black, I have to kill X, and it gives some MTRR error when I kill it.

startx yields different results. As a normal user, it blinks black, then kicks back to the console giving
FATAL: Module i915 not found.
Setting master
waiting for X server to shut down. Dropping master
error setting MTRR. Invalid argument (22)

As root, however, startx starts the KDE desktop environment (kde-4.2.4) and everything seems fine. Oviously I'm not going to just run KDE as root. I find it very strange that KDE will launch using startx as root, but as root typing X gives a black screen.

Current versions:
kernel 2.6.31-r2
xf86-intel-video-2.8.1
xorg-server-1.6.3.901-r2
xorg-x11-7.4-r1

CONFIG_DRM_I915=y
CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS is not set

I have no idea where to go from here.

I'm running an eee pc 1000he, it's got an Intel 945GME for video

nevermind everything I just posted. I had a KDE problem that is now resolved. It was never an X problem.

Anyone else here running i915 hardware on latest 2.6.32_rc5 git? I get screen flickering issues, latest Anholt patches don't fix it.

xorg-server-1.7.1 / latest xf86-video-intel-9999

i´m using rc5 + xorg-server-1.7.1 + 2.9.1 and have not seen any problems. Maybe downgrading intel´s driver is worth a try.

cheers

Indeed, flickering is gone for now. I'll give it some time before I consider it resolved, reason could either be libdrm or xf86-video-intel which I downgraded both from live to latest stable.

EDIT: No, still seeing those issues.

EDIT#2: Fixed since 2.6.32_rc5-r6! :)
