Unfortunately, that's not an option (and not because of the 3d, which I couldn't care less about).

Actually neither radeon nor radeonhd will work for me, and I have really tried for months, with every version of the driver(s), xorg, kernel and mesa, numbered and live, with all sorts of configurations (and without them). Only lately I have been able to make them work, but only without DRI, which means not even 2d acceleration, which means that I can't even use xv, not even see an xvid file on a sempron +1800. fglrx is crap. But the alternative is "nothing" for me.

I won't develop about that here, I don't want to taint the thread with other drivers. I'll just say that for me there's no alternative, and I know I am not alone.

I am curious to know how are you, guys and girls, dealing with the damn log spam problem. It's really annoying because I have to stop syslog, remove the files and restart it again (you know, the file descriptor is not closed until the las process using a file is over, even if you delete the files).

personally, i've migrated to KMS+TTM+live xf86-video-ati driver...

i've had enough of fglrx, i prefer no desktop effects (using R600 core here) to my hopes evaporating with every catalyst release...
and to think that i (still) am an amd fanboy...

Are you using KMS on a R600 ? I thought that KMS on radeon was only available for older chips.

Thanks. I had seen that patch around for some days, I was just wondering if someone else came with any other solution that didn't involve patching the kernel. It works without much problem, though in nature it's just a hack to avoid the symptoms, but that's all we can expect until the driver is fixed, I suppose.

Well that's true... Following i92guboj's post I realised I'm not getting DRI either... it seems my relatively decent athlon64 X2 made up for it...

Anyway at least I've got the infrastructure ready for when support is finally there... Video playback is OK however as long as I'm not compiling anything....

I doubt the problem is the same. You won't ever get 3d DRI until the relevant dri module is in place (you can see how it fails to load in the log because it simply doesn't exist). But that error is to be expected and is fine.

Still, you should be able to set Options "DRI" "on", and it should work and you will at least get 2d acceleration, giving you also xvideo support, which doesn't work for me. In my case, I don't even get that, because as soon as I set DRI to on I get heavy screen corruption. As said, I don't want to taint this thread any more than I already did with that. So if you want to know more about my issue you can look here:
