I'm not entirely sure to describe what I am trying to accomplish but I'll try.

I am looking for something that is a combination of cat + "tail -f" for binary files. Let me describe the situation. Lets say dvb is writing a file of a live show. The file is growing and growing but when I use a program like cat/dd it seems to only pipe to the filesize when the program is started and stops when it thinks the filesize has been reached.

eg. cat filename.mpg | vlc - 'strm:whatever'

My question is what is a program that can keep streaming a file and keep the pipe open even while the file grows in size? "tail-f", dd, dd_rescue, tee, cat, and a few other combinations do not seem to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You use ext(3|4)? When I downloading for example video from youtube to reiserfs and I have 2% of file size, I can play mplayer file.flv it and if download is enaught fast I can watch whole video without restarting mplayer etc, Only I cant scroll to forward/back video but its normal, I playing 'broken' file (before download is done). So my solution is - test reiserfs (not reiser4!).

I will have to try using mplayer/mencoder just to read the file and pipe it unchanged. What I'm doing is piping the file over samba to vlc, vlc transcodes it and sends it out over interwebs. I'm kinda surprised vlc doesn't take that into account.

netcat may do what you want.
