I use x11 overlay but today my morning uDav world led to
this ugly scene:

Code:
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     UD] x11-proto/xproto-7.0.14 [7.0.15] 149 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-proto/xextproto-7.0.4 [7.0.5] 78 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-proto/xcb-proto-1.2 [1.4] 85 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-libs/libX11-1.1.5 [1.2] USE="-debug -ipv6 -xcb*" 1,548 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-libs/libxcb-1.1.90.1 [1.2] USE="-debug -doc (-selinux)" 465 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-libs/libXext-1.0.4 [1.0.5] USE="-debug" 259 kB [1=>0]
[ebuild     U ] app-text/texlive-core-2008-r5 [2008-r4] USE="X -doc -source -tk" 23,275 kB [0]
[ebuild  N    ] media-libs/glew-1.5.1  386 kB [0]
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/mesa-7.4.1-r1 [7.4] USE="motif nptl -debug -doc -pic -xcb" VIDEO_CARDS="intel -mach64 -mga -none -r128 -radeon -radeonhd% -s3virge -savage -sis (-sunffb) -tdfx -trident -via" 3,299 kB [0]
[ebuild     UD] x11-base/xorg-server-1.5.3-r5 [1.6.1]

I tried masking mesa > 7.4 but still got all the initial downgrades.

Anyone know what is going on here?

We are moving stuff from overlay to the main tree.
Stuff will get unmasked when remi is done with it.

What was the problem leaving the ebuilds in the overlay while migrating? I accidently did the downgrade. Since then, I am unable to get an X version working, mostly because of issues with libxcb-xlib.la. I even removed the overlay, but to no avail. Any suggestions (package/version combinations?)

I don't andestend, how I must fix for continue using packages from X11 overlay without downgrading to portage tree.

P.S. Temporaly I manually update selected packages, without use "emerge -uND world"

Yeah, that was crazy annoying. Xorg 1.6.1 works sooooooo much better than the older versions on my 945GM!

I had no known issues with xorg-1.6.1 so I just packaged masked every version lower than I had installed on the three packages.
Code:

jmd0 mythtv # tail /etc/portage/package.mask/x11-1.6
<x11-proto/xproto-7.0.15
<x11-proto/xextproto-7.0.5
<x11-libs/libX11-1.2

Wouldn't that mean that you have all versions masked? Isn't it easier to simply unmask non-cvs versions?:
Code:
$ cat /etc/portage/package.unmask
<x11-base/xorg-server-9999
<x11-libs/libXext-9999
<x11-libs/libX11-9999
<x11-libs/libxcb-9999
<x11-proto/xcb-proto-9999
<x11-proto/xproto-9999
<x11-proto/xextproto-9999

Most likely, until the mask is lifted from portage or I want to upgrade one of those packages.

I do this so that it will have no chance of downgrading. It will not upgrade these packages (until I unmask) either but does not cause any problems for now..

I generally do this on most forced downgrades unless I am having a real problem which on my system is quite rare.

Now I'm getting this:

Code:
!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

x11-libs/libX11:0

  ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/libX11-1.2', 'nomerge') pulled in by
    >=x11-libs/libX11-1.2 required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/libXext-1.0.5', 'nomerge')
    (and 65 more)

  ('ebuild', '/', 'x11-libs/libX11-1.1.5', 'merge') pulled in by
    x11-libs/libX11 required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/libXrandr-1.3.0', 'nomerge')
    x11-libs/libX11 required by ('installed', '/', 'media-video/vlc-0.9.8a', 'nomerge')
    x11-libs/libX11 required by ('installed', '/', 'x11-libs/libXtst-1.0.3', 'nomerge')
    (and 62 more)

this is starting to be a drag ...

echo "<x11-libs/libX11-1.2" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

Should help. You may need the other two. See my post above..

... yeah, I know. It's having to do this for the last few weeks that I meant
by "kind of a drag".

I agree.

To me I would prefer the "experimental" packages to be in layman until they become stable. This moving to the tree and hard masking I find annoying.
