Since upgrading to firefox-3.5_beta4 google gadgets won't start, it says
Code:
Program can't start because it failed to load the following module(s):  js-script-runtime
and running it from a terminal shows
Code:
Not a regular file: /
Failed to find proper Gecko Runtime Environment!

The problem is that google-gadgets is looking for xulrunner-1.9.0.*, beta versions of firefox are using 1.9.1
http://code.google.com/p/google-gadgets-for-linux/issues/detail?id=286#c2

According to that it is fixed in trunk.

I do have a few solutions (hacks) I can share. First one is the simplest, but has not worked very well for me. If you have the qt version you can load google gadgets like so:
Code:
ggl-qt --script-runtime qt

It loads for me, but some things with crazy javascript don't work. For example the Google Docs gadget.

This next solution is a rather hackish, but it works pretty well. If you look in /etc/gre.d/ you will see how to tell applications what versions of xulrunner are on your system. What is nifty is you can lie by specifying what ever version you want with what is in the brackets, [1.9.0.1], for example. I tried telling it that 1.9.0.1 is where 1.9.1 is located and it gets a symbol error related to a javascript function. So I then pointed it to 1.8.1.19 and it segfaults. Anyways, enough of the background story, this is what somehow works.

Install the latest stable www-client/mozilla-firefox-bin from portage, currently 3.0.10. Copy the files libmozjs.so and libxpcom.so to ~/.gre.d/
Create the directory if it doesn't exist. Then create and edit a file named ~/.gre.d/1.9.0.1.conf and put the following in the contents:
Code:
[1.9.0.1]
GRE_PATH=/home/username/.gre.d
xulrunner=true
abi=x86-gcc3
javaxpcom=1

Now I'm using the user directory for easy deletion once we don't need such hacks anymore. You can just as easily use /etc/gre.d and put those lib files where ever you like. Also at this point you can uninstall firefox-bin. I'm still playing with google gadgets, but Google Docs gadget definitely works.

Enjoy.
